Help Your Child Build Writing Skills

Sandwiched somewhere between reading for meaning and tackling mathematics problems, kids are expected to write a lot. They’re writing stories, persuasive arguments, letters, PowerPoint/Keynote presentations, and content for their own websites and Blogs. And yet, for all the writing kids do, many struggle to come up with words to put on paper. Students in upper primary, and high school may be especially reluctant because they are self-conscious about their writing or think they have nothing of value to say. Shelbie Witte, an assistant professor in English education at Florida State University, says the best way parents can help a child write is to do the following…
Here are some of her strategies for helping your child become a better writer:
  • Show your child how revision is necessary in life. “Show how recipes are revised through tasting,” she says. “Revision is just part of life.”
  • Talk about how much you write in your daily life: emails, memos, letters, text messages. “There are so many opportunities for writing in the real world,” Witte says. Show your child how you review an email and make changes to improve it before sending.
  • Let your child know that every occupation requires writing. Doctors write. Artists write. Athletes write. Look for examples everywhere you go of people writing as part of their professional lives. Encourage adults in your child’s life to point out examples of writing and revision.
  • Show your child how writing can help them work through problems and find a solution. If something is bothering them, have them write about it. Or if your family is having a problem, such as feeling over scheduled or not being able to stick to a budget, have your child write down potential solutions.
  • Help your child tackle mathematics problems with writing. Sometimes writing a paragraph or sentence about how you plan to solve an equation can help. “If ever there were a skill that crosses every curriculum area, it’s writing,” Witte says. “Writing can help you get a better handle on an abstract concept.”
  • Emphasize reading and writing as two of life’s great pleasures that go together. “Writing shouldn’t be held in isolation,” Witte says.
  • Encourage your child to write letters. Not the electronic kind, but handwritten letters. Whether they write to a grandparent or a pen pal in another country, they’ll gain valuable practice expressing themselves through words. “Writing a letter is such an emotional, personal thing,” Witte says.
  • Read your child’s writing and comment on it. Take time to praise your child’s writing. “Audience is a big part of motivation,” Witte says.

Message from the Board of Trustees
Welcome everyone to Term 3, especially to all our new students who have recently started with us.  This term looks to be a very exciting term for all.  Here is a snapshot of what is happening across the school.
  • Rooms 1, 2 and 15 have merged into an Innovative Learning Environment.  The wall between Rooms 1 and 2 has been opened up to create a fantastic new environment for our students.
  • In Year 3 the students continue to enjoy the Roots of Empathy programme and have had a wonderful experience with horses visiting on the school grounds as part of the real learning.
  • The Year 4, 5 and 6 teams are busy preparing for the school production of the stage musical “Best foot forward” being held on 19-21 September.  Tickets go on sale from week 5, more information to come...

This year we will be having the Education Review Office (ERO) officials visiting our school towards the end of the year to ensure our school is meeting the Ministry of Education’s (MoE) expectations.
At Murrays Bay School we are always striving to better meet the needs of our community and are working to be more transparent in as many areas as possible.  We have initiated a new digital governance manual School Docs, to allow our community to be more informed about our school, which will be available online later this year.
The Board of Trustees strive to create an exceptional learning environment and welcomes any feedback on governance.
Remember that all are welcome to attend our Board meetings, with the next meeting being held on 9 August from 7.00pm.

Brett Ingold
Board Trustee - Murrays Bay School

Netsafe Information Evening
We would like to invite you to a Netsafe Information Evening being held at 5.30pm on Thursday 4th August 2016, this evening has been planned as a result of feedback received from our BYOD Information evening held last year.  As we expect a large response to this event we have scheduled it to be held in Waipapa and ask that you RSVP below.

Lee Chisholm will be our Educator.  Lee is the Education and Training Specialist at NetSafe.  She has a background in counselling, mediation and management, and joined NetSafe in 2005.  Schools and the public contact NetSafe to seek advice on a wide range of online challenges. These are as diverse as online harassment and bullying, offensive and damaging sexual content, malicious software, theft of data and a myriad of scams.

Lee’s experience enables her to share some preventative strategies to reduce the chances of your children being adversely impacted by online challenges.

The session will cover
Online safety
•         Safe and secure online habits at home and beyond
•         What young people are doing online
•         Some challenges presented by using social media
•         Conversations you might have with children about online practice
•        A chance to ask your questions (and no tech knowledge required!)

Please RSVP by following this link, we look forward to seeing you there.

Kind Regards

Walking School Bus

Murrays Bay School currently has 2 active Walking School Buses.  The Lyons Ave bus meets at the Rothesay Bay Shops and walks down Lyons Ave, and up Aotearoa Tce to school.  They currently have about 17 children registered to walk and run a roster of parents who walk one or 2 mornings a week.

The Penzance Road route has 23 children registered.  We have a group of 7 parents who walk most days with the children.  This bus leaves from Penzance Road and walks through the walkway to Jutland Road, up to Rangitoto Kindy in Hythe Tce, up Beach Road to Sunrise, then down Clematis St to the main school driveway.

We would love to start other buses around Gulf View Road and also coming down Sunrise Ave from near Rosedale Road.  We can help with the setting up of a new route if you would like to start one in your area.  Auckland Transport provide great support and funding for new routes.

Please contact Sarah Dearlove on 021 184 0739 if you are interested in joining or starting a new route.
