BIRDING "TWEETS" AT RHINO SAFARI CAMP
There's no doubt about it. Lake Kariba is birding paradise. The extensive creeks and shorelines of the Matusadona National Park on Kariba's southern boundary provide an idyllic destination for amateur birding enthusiasts and serious ornithologists to tick off their birdlists and seek out their "lifers" among Southern Africa's water and woodland bird species.
The owners of Rhino Safari Camp, an intimate, 14-bedded bushcamp in the wilds of the National Park at the edge of the lake, inspire their guests to enjoy the birds as much as the wildlife of the area. They recently took part in the annual Waterbird Survey co-ordinated by Birdlife Zimbabwe and reported some interesting birding sightings.
"We are excited to discover that we have a HUGE breeding colony of Grey-Headed Gulls on the extreme tip of our concession at Elephant Point, says Jenny Nobes. The first Common Sandpiper was spotted (an early migrant returning to Southern Africa from breeding in the Palearctic Region which includes Europe, North Africa and Northern Asia). The Kittlitz Plovers have had babies - tiny little balls of fluff darting about along the shorelines of the lake, and the African Fish Eagles (pictured below left) are all nesting on their untidy bundles of sticks perched high in the branches of dead trees."
Of course all the usual waterbirds were recorded: egrets and herons (including the massive Goliath Heron above right), several species of kingfisher (centre), various waders, lapwings and plovers and many many more.
Camp visitors also witnessed four three different types of vulture feeding on a carcass (White-backed, Lappet-faced, Hooded and White-headed Vultures). A rare African Hobby (a type of Falcon) was seen near the camp, and Grey-headed Parrots (less common than their relatives, the Meyers Parrots).
Meantime, in the shady environs of Rhino Safari Camp, which is built nestled into the surrounding "jesse bush" which marks the high water levels of Lake Kariba, the birdbaths attract all manner of everyday woodland bird species. There are of course the ubiquitous Doves, Bulbuls, Starlings and Drongos, the Wagtails, Weavers, Waxbills and Finches, the Warblers and the Robin-Chats, the colourful Bee-eaters and Sunbirds. There are visits by the Grey-headed Bush-Shrike, and seasonal displays by the Paradise Fly-catcher. The list is endless.... enough to boggle the binoculars of any budding "twitcher".

MUSANGO HAS A FACELIFT
News from Musango Island Safari Camp is that their camp refurbishments continue, and they are delighted with the results. Says owner, Wendy Edwards: "We have made the rooms much bigger and done away with the tent zips so that the entire front of the rooms is now open (gauzed) to the view of the Matusadona Hills and mouth of the Ume River. All our rooms have an amazing view of Lake Kariba, all with big outside areas to sit out in under the trees that go down to the beach. The whole look is much brighter and lighter. We have gone for a “Batonga” theme for the decor as we are in the heart of the Tonga peoples' traditional lands, and have decorated the rooms with some interesting artefacts collected over the years."
Musango is a 16-bed owner-run safari camp situated on its own island in Lake Kariba, overlooking the western end of the Matusadona National Park .

FEATURE:
CLASSIC TENTED SAFARIS - ORIGINAL, AUTHENTIC AND CLOSE TO NATURE
"An out-of-this-world safari can bring you back down to earth..." say the folk from John Stevens Safaris Guided Safaris, who operate award-winning, bespoke guided safaris in Africa's best wilderness areas, including Mana Pools National Park and World Heritage Site.
Here's what they maintain, (and we couldn't agree more!).
"..Sometimes it feels like the world could do with a little less technology, plastic, sparkle and, well, excess... there seems no better way to steady the nerves and quiet the mind than getting ‘back to basics’ by going on safari....
There’s something about being out in the African wilderness that helps us understand our place in the universe. In wild, raw, magnificent Africa, our senses are sharpened; emotions are closer to the surface and the cares of our everyday lives seem to fall into insignificance when we experience the immensity of it all. It feels good to slow down to the pace of Africa, too, where nature works to its own timetable. And the freedom that comes with that is incredibly liberating!
The original tented safari, although now redefined with modern-day advantages, provides a ‘proper’ adventure.
Why? Because you’re closer to it all. Many of the camps only operate seasonally, and so keep perfectly in tune with nature. The mobile camps, especially, offer a return to simplicity and move around with the highest wildlife concentrations. In a mobile or tented safari camp, you’re under canvas; it’s more intimate and captures the spirit of safaris in the old days. The ground is underfoot. The night sounds are all around. But the most defining aspect of a tented camp is the experience that comes with it. Track lions on your own two feet, hear the soft pad of an elephant as it passes by just on the other side of your tent, see the stars in all their sweeping glory from your bed and hear your own heartbeat as you take it all in... this is the kind of safari that allows for deeper interactions and closer connections. But wait. It gets better. Because there’s certainly no hardship in a classic tented safari camp. You will sleep in real beds, enjoy 3-course meals under the night sky and sip on sundowners from the most perfect vantage points. Most tented camps are not much bigger than just eight or ten tents, a set-up that provides an appealingly laid-back and personal exclusivity. Unspoiled, often far-flung settings, exhilarating wildlife interactions, private vehicles and expert guides are the norm in these camps.
Camps that live up to the term ‘authentic’ are some of our favourites because of the safari experiences they provide and the life-changing moments they present. Okay, so some teeter on the really luxurious end, admittedly, but still manage to somehow maintain a sense of reality. Others are more basic and practical, but always comfortable. ...Bear in mind that it's less about the camp and more about the encounters and interactions you’ll have, the memories you’ll take home with you - and, most of all, the new lease on life, the new view of the world, the new you that is sure to emerge from these."
In Mana Pools, John Stevens Guided Safaris operate out of the seasonal mobile tented camp run by the Mana Pools Safari Company (see below).
TENTED SAFARI OPTIONS IN MANA POOLS
One of the many attractions of Mana Pools National Park, which contributes significantly towards its elevated status as a World Heritage Site, is the fact that it has been planned to offer visitors an authentic tourism experience in a wild place. In Mana Pools there are no large hotels. No holiday resorts. No conference centres. No grid electricity. No tarred roads. No shops. No fences. No telephones. Limited mobile and internet coverage. Instead, there are a small number of intimate, wilderness-orientated, classic tented camps, with a few modern refinements for comfort, designed to put the romance and authenticity back into an African safari. The idea is simple - get away from the city, get into the wild and get closer to Nature.
Here are some of the best of the Mana Pools tented camp experiences:-
THE MANA POOLS SAFARI COMPANY
This is a colonial-style safari camp, with a modern touch, run by the daughter and son-in-law of renowned pro-guide, John Stevens. Set at the edge of the Zambezi River in Mana Pools, the camp offers luxurious tented rooms with full beds, cool Egyptian cotton sheets, soft rugs, linen cushions and toiletries. Each tent has its own en-suite hot shower and loo with wooden decking, and a private, shaded front awning with its own chairs and a table for quiet relaxation. The camp has a central dining tent offering all-day refreshments and fine cuisine. Game drives, canoeing and walks are on offer with exceptional guiding to the highest standards.
For more information and contact details see The Mana Pools Safari Company. If you have something to say about this camp, please submit a Travel Review at the above link.

The rooms are lit by solar lamps and natural light from the big, gauzed windows. The camp also features a new, spacious, open-sided lounge and dining area which offers 360° views of the surrounding bush.

The tents are large, with twin beds; each has an en-suite, open-air bathroom with thatched grass walls, flush toilets and bucket showers. Activities include guided game drives and walks from camp in the morning and canoeing on the Zambezi in the afternoon. The food is wholesome home style cooking and evening meals are enjoyed under the stars. Bushlife Safaris also offer more basic, fully-mobile tented canoeing and walking experiences along the Zambezi and at Chitake Spring.

WONDERFUL, WILD, WEDDING VENUE: A CHAPEL IN THE BUSH!
You can't imagine a more romantic setting for a formal wedding ceremony in the African bush than this historic little Catholic Mission Church (pictured) near Chirundu.
This lovely old chapel is located on Chirundu Estates just downstream from the border town where the main Harare-Lusaka highway bridge crosses the Zambezi River.
Historically, the chapel was part of the Paul VI Catholic Mission, which opened in 1965 and included a Hospital, School and Church, servicing the local community most of whom were employed on the huge government-funded sugar-cane estates in Chirundu. Catholic Lady Doctors and Nursing Sisters from Rome in Italy ran the Mission which was named after Pope Paul VI.
At the time, the Catholic Archdiocese of Milan was responsible for the religious care of Chirundu and Kariba, and provided finance for the building of a Mission in the area. The soon-to-be Pope, was Cardinal of Milan at the time, and visited Chirundu in 1962 to approve the project which was later named after him.
During the troubled years of Rhodesia's war of liberation from colonial rule, several years later, the Mission was closed down due to security concerns, and never re-opened.
However, the charming little Chapel still stands, and, every now and again, is lovingly tidied up and restored to provide a perfect bush venue for the exchanging of marriage vows and other happy family occasions!
After this particular wedding ceremony at the chapel, the reception for 180 people was held in the grounds of Jecha Point Fishing Camp just a few kilometres away on the banks of the Zambezi. Some guests were accommodated at this delightful camp and others at nearby Chirundu Safari Lodge & Tamarind Camp and Tiger Safaris.
(Thanks to Chirundu Safari Lodge and Jecha Point Fishing Lodge for the photos)
If you have experienced a wedding or stayed at any of the above venues in Chirundu, please submit at Travel Review on Wild Zambezi on the relevant listings page.

TIGER SAFARIS - NOT JUST THE FISHING.... WEDDINGS & WILDLIFE TOO!
Wild Zambezi was delighted to receive recent news from Tiger Safaris in Chirundu with a picture of these two little cuties proudly displaying their tigerfish!
This little camp situated on the banks of the Zambezi River just downstream from the border town of Chirundu, offers self-catering or catered accommodation (up to 38 people) for fishing groups and families. They have a number of fishing boats for hire, with experienced skippers who know the river well and can find you the best fishing spots in the area. Their spacious green lawns looking out over the river provide the perfect venue for large gatherings, making Tiger Safaris a popular choice for weddings.
Here's what they have to tell us:-
"We have built our much needed kitchen to assist with all the catering required at camp, from fully catered guests to big events such as weddings and fishing competitions. It has made the world of difference to our catering.
We have had three successful weddings since March, hosting our largest to date of 150 guests. The beauty of having your special day here at Tiger Safaris is your options of where to set up your ceremony and where to set up your reception area. Every wedding we have had has been different in so many ways. We now have a beautiful beach area situated just down river by chalet one. The perfect spot for that intimate ceremony.
Fishing in the winter on the river slows down considerably in comparison to the rest of the year. However, the fishing recently has been really good. The Catch and Release we have been practicing seems to be working. Some stats from July - 57 fish caught, 56 released, biggest fish landed 7kilo and average size caught 4.5kgs.
Considering our close proximity to the town and border of Chirundu, guests often ask us .. Do you get any game through the camp? ….. Well here goes…. In April, we were so lucky to witness a few new things here on the river. We were fortunate enough to be drifting not far from Kanyemba Island , when we noticed three buffalo swimming frantically in the water. They had somehow got caught up in the current and were fighting their way back from the middle of the river to the island. A first ever sighting for us and for Amos the driver. They made it to land (see above left).
Our next sighting was even better. We had packed up our second wedding of the year, and were all tucked up in bed when we got a phone call from a staff member telling us to hurry as there was (what they thought) a cheetah in the tree just outside the camp. On arrival we were amazed to see it was in fact a young leopard. With great excitement we managed to get one photo (see above centre) but she was unamused and slowly made her way into the thicket of the mustard bush. We often see leopard spoor but have never been lucky enough to see one up close and personal.
Having lived at the river over 3 years now, we have often heard of the staff talking about the African Rock Python, - they call it ‘shato’ in Shona . In the last 2 months we have had 3 in camp! The biggest measuring approx. 3 meters in length and was found near our staff quarters with a rather large monitor lizard in its grasp. This was quite a sight to see but we realised that it needed to be caught and relocated. We have managed to relocate two near the Mongwe turn off and one in the RIFA floodplain.
As the bush is so much drier now, the game are out in force. We have had elephants in the camp daily (see above right), from the resident bull herds to some large cow herds and their new additions. We have had a lone buffalo hanging around the baobab tree that looks down on the pool for a few weeks now and our friendly warthogs are back."
For more information and contact details see Tiger Safaris.
