Dementia Therapy Through Hypnotherapy
It was while training in hypno-psychotherapy that Dr Daniel Nightingale had an idea that the majority of the professional dementia community laughed at. That idea was that hypnosis might be a good way of helping people live more positively with the challenges of dementia.Teaming up with his good friend Dr Simon Duff, a Chartered Psychologist, Dr Nightingale set about putting this idea to the test. Several years later and the professional dementia community are no longer laughing – they are quite simply astounded. So, what happened in Dr Nightingale’s study, and how can hypnotherapy help dementia sufferers? He decided to concentrate on measuring the outcomes of 7 key areas of enjoying a good quality of life that were affected by dementia. The dementia sufferers who participated in the research each received a weekly hypnosis session of about an hour.
The 7 key areas were:
- Concentration
- Relaxation
- Motivation
- Activities of Daily Living
- Immediate memory
- Memory for significant life events
- Socialization
The doctors found that dementia sufferers who had received the hypnosis sessions showed an improvement in concentration, memory and socialisation. In addition, relaxation, motivation and activities of daily living also improved with the use of hypnosis.
Dr Nightingale has stated “Evidence to date has shown that we can enhance the quality of life for people living with dementia through the correct use of hypnosis. We have now developed a course for clinicians who wish to incorporate hypnosis into health care plans.” Steve is now the first person in Wales to register as a Dementia Therapy Specialist through Hypnotherapy using Dr Nightingale’s techniques.
