July Highlights

Again, we have had a successful month at LLLY and we want to thank you all for being a part of our journey. We are especially proud of Steve who has now been registered as a dementia specialist through hypnotherapy (keep reading to find out how hypnotherapy can help dementia sufferers in the “Golden Nuggets” section). Steve is the first person in Wales to register as a Dementia Therapy Specialist through Hypnotherapy.
Congratulations Steve!

Mindfulness and Meditation Workshop

On July 21st , Steve held LLLY’s first Mindfulness & Meditation workshop at Octavo’s Book Café & Wine Bar in Cardiff Bay. The free event was held in the evening, and Steve gave a fantastic presentation to an attentive crowd. He explained what mindfulness and meditation really mean and he taught some stress-relieving breathing and meditation techniques. It was lovely to see lots of new and familiar faces there!
Following the success of the event, we will be holding more evenings at Octavo’s in September and October. The themes of these workshops will be “Confidence – what’s your story?” and “An Introduction to Hypnosis.”
Both these events will be free for those attending, so if you would like to register your interest, please get in touch with us at info@lovelifeloveyou.co.uk, we will be posting more information soon. We also hope to continue running these free events: if there are any topics you would like to see covered, again just send us an email to the address above.

Golden Nugget

Dementia Therapy Through Hypnotherapy

It was while training in hypno-psychotherapy that Dr Daniel Nightingale had an idea that the majority of the professional dementia community laughed at. That idea was that hypnosis might be a good way of helping people live more positively with the challenges of dementia.Teaming up with his good friend Dr Simon Duff, a Chartered Psychologist, Dr Nightingale set about putting this idea to the test. Several years later and the professional dementia community are no longer laughing – they are quite simply astounded. So, what happened in Dr Nightingale’s study, and how can hypnotherapy help dementia sufferers? He decided to concentrate on measuring the outcomes of 7 key areas of enjoying a good quality of life that were affected by dementia. The dementia sufferers who participated in the research each received a weekly hypnosis session of about an hour.

The 7 key areas were:
  • Concentration
  • Relaxation
  • Motivation
  • Activities of Daily Living
  • Immediate memory
  • Memory for significant life events
  • Socialization

The doctors found that dementia sufferers who had received the hypnosis sessions showed an improvement in concentration, memory and socialisation. In addition, relaxation, motivation and activities of daily living also improved with the use of hypnosis.
Dr Nightingale has stated “Evidence to date has shown that we can enhance the quality of life for people living with dementia through the correct use of hypnosis. We have now developed a course for clinicians who wish to incorporate hypnosis into health care plans.” Steve is now the first person in Wales to register as a Dementia Therapy Specialist through Hypnotherapy using Dr Nightingale’s techniques. If you would like more information about the work he does and how this could benefit you or a loved one, please get in touch with us at info@lovelifeloveyou.co.uk.

Your Monthly Freebie

Following on from our Mindfulness & Meditation workshop, this month’s freebie is a tool to help you de-stress in five minutes. And it’s all to do with your breath! Breathing is, luckily, an automatic process for us all. But, have you noticed that when you get stressed your breathing can become short and shallow? This just adds to the stress of the situation. Not good! If you find yourself in a stressful moment, pause for a little while and focus your attention onto your breath. Start to breathe mindfully. Once you do so, the body’s relaxation response will be triggered and you will lower your heart rate and return to your normal, relaxed self! Have a go this month at using Dr Frank Lipman’s breathing technique called “The Speedy Soother”. This is an abdominal (lower belly) breathing exercise.

1. Find somewhere quiet where you won’t be disturbed.

2. Get comfortable – you can lie down or sit up, either works.

3. Put your hands onto your lower belly. Close your mouth and touch your tongue up to meet the roof of your mouth. Then breathe through your nose.

4. Inhale slowly and deeply into the part of your belly that your hands are touching. Feel the movement of the belly moving up and down. It should feel like your hands are holding a balloon that is constantly inflating and deflating.

5. Try to get rid of all the breath in your lungs when you exhale. This means that breathing out should probably take you twice as long as breathing in.

6. Repeat this exercise for around 5 minutes.

How do you feel? Nice and calm, we can guarantee it!
