Scything Course

Greenwood Days are running a course for those looking to learn how to scythe or refresh their skills.  It will be taught by Steve Tomlin who runs the Scything Association and is one of the countries experts. All equipment is provided for the day and the course is also an ideal opportunity to buy a scythe kit containing everything you will need.

We Are The Uncivilised: a film screening

Disillusioned by a cultural story of consumption and alienation, a couple are called to action. Carrying with them their unborn child, they embark on a year-long journey around the UK, searching for the seeds of an alternative culture and with it hope for the future. Without any prior filmmaking experience, they buy a second hand film camera, and set off with an intention to share their experience. They speak to grassroots activists alongside pioneering voices to uncover an ‘uncivilised’ story of relationship, connection and belonging.  On this quest, they take with them a question – what could an uncivilised world look like?

B-Hive at Belper Farmer’s Market

Don’t Despair - Chesterfield Repair!

Chesterfield Repair Café is a bi-monthly event where anyone can bring along broken household items to be fixed for free by a team of volunteer expert fixers. The team can fix a wide range of goods such as laptops, toys, clothes, phones and small pieces of furniture. www.transitionchesterfield.org

As part of national SuperHomes months, a home in Nottingham which has had been retrofitted to use less than 60% fossil fuels than it used to will be open to the public. Lukas and Mary have installed measures including solar panels, floor insulation and draughtproofing. SuperHomes is an expanding network of energy saving pioneers that have saved energy through successful sustainable refurbishment. Electric Buses Get the Green Light in Nottinghamshire
 
Bus passengers in Broxtowe will benefit from quieter, fume-free journey after Nottinghamshire County Council received government funding for two electric buses on the 510 route. The buses, which should in use within the next 12-18 months, will to serve communities in Stapleford and Beeston. Electric buses are better for people’s health, reduce CO₂ and are cheaper to run http://bit.ly/2ajihp0

Pick Your Own at Brooke Farm
 
Locally grown fresh and juicy summer fruits are now available to pick or buy from Brooke Farm in Linby. Brooke Farm provides horticultural and other training for people with learning difficulties and is run by Nottinghamshire County Council. The farm also produces eggs, fruit and vegetables as well as a range of bedding plants and flowers. http://bit.ly/2azkdGT

Northern Green Gathering Stewarding Opportunities

 

Derbyshire Dales based festival, Northern Green Gathering (NGG). Is looking for Stewards to help at this year’s festival which runs from 11th-14th August. NGG brings people together to educate, celebrate and debate a wide range of environmental issues. The Gathering is run on Greenfield sites and solely powered by renewable energy. Activities include a children’s area and parades, workshops for crafts, sustainable living, music, campaigns, a healing area, sauna and a communal bonfire. Only organic food is served in the festival’s cafes. In return for entry stewards complete three shifts of 6-8 hours. Junk4Funk at GloWorm Festival

Junk4Funk, a project which encourages children to think about waste, recycling and climate change by getting them to make musical instruments from waste, will be appearing at GloWorm Festival in Worksop on 20th and 21st August.

NEWS: DECC Closes

 

The Department for Energy and Climate Change has closed and is now part of the new Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BFIS), effectively a merger of DECC and the former Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). The minister with responsibility for climate change is now Nick Hurd MP. Some responses to this news:

RESOURCE: High Tech Energy Advice Kit Available for Loan

 

Groups providing energy advice can now borrow some high tech kit to improve the advice they offer. The Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE) has been using Chariot, a web-based service for collecting, interpreting and displaying information about a home’s temperature, humidity levels and energy consumption in their energy advice work. Wireless sensors are placed around a home and the data collected is analysed and used to advise householders. CSE now have some kits to lend out to organisations offering energy efficiency advice. http://bit.ly/2ahPT7E
 

FUNDING: Fundraising Through Local Giving

 

Localgiving is a website which allows community groups to raise donations online and get match funding for these donations. https://localgiving.org

 

FUNDING Celebrate England Fund

 

Community organisations are being invited to apply for up to £10,000 of funding to showcase their area and bring local people together. The new fund, run by the Big Lottery, is open now and will close when funds run out. Your event doesn’t have to be climate change or eco related, but it could provide a good opportunity to show what you’ve been doing to make your community greener. http://bit.ly/29OZoeM

 

FUNDING: Greggs Foundation Environmental Grants

 

Greggs are now using the money raised from charging 5p for a carrier bag to offer grants of up to £2000 for environmental projects. http://bit.ly/2axwAq3

TRAINING: Sign up for a Bright Green Future
 
15-17 year olds who are interested in sustainability and caring for the environment are being encouraged to sign up for a new training programme beginning in September. Bright Green Future is a two-year programme offering young people the chance to gain knowledge and experience, meet like-minded people, and make a difference in their local area. They will start to influence how decisions are made on energy and climate change, which could lead to a bright career in the sector.
