Talking Tech

What's on our minds in Aug...

Building an efficient tech stack

The general shift towards cloud technology and digital apps has revolutionized operations for small businesses, but could your choice of technology actually be holding your business back? Many companies simply build their tech infrastructure piecemeal, signing up for platform services or software as needed. But oftentimes, the end result is a tangle of systems that don't play well with each other, cost too much money for what they offer, or aren’t set up to provide you with the right reporting.

Your tech stack should run like a well-oiled machine—it should be well-integrated, efficient, and give you meaningful data that can improve the profitability of your business. How do you know if you’re choosing the right platforms for your business? Check out our basic 101 guide on building an effective tech stack.

Summer in the Streets

NYC’s biggest summer block party is here: Summer Streets 2016 will take place on the first three Saturdays in August (6, 13, 20). There will be 7 miles of open streets and “rest stops” with free activities. Oh, and a GIANT WATERSLIDE.

A few fun business hacks

Payzing

Amazing payments with Payzing

For e-commerce merchants, payment fees and chargebacks can be the bane of your business. Now there is another option: Payzing, created by online bank Uphold, has launched a new payment system that offers instant access to funds, no chargebacks, and a flat 0.25% fee. Currently it only accepts payments via Uphold members, so while it won’t replace your credit card processor any time soon, it can save you a lot of money from Uphold customers. And with built-in integration to Shopify, there’s no reason not to offer it.
Pokemon Go for businesses

Profiting from Pokémon

Has your business been taken over by random walkers staring into their smartphones? You could be the location of a PokeStop or Gym, real-life locations where players go in order to collect Pokémon goodies or battle other users. Although some spots have caused controversy, many businesses have lightheartedly taken advantage of the situation to drive sales. Wondering if you can cash in on the craze? Check out Inc.’s guide to profiting from Pokémon.

Adding it all up...

"The first rule of any technology used in business is that automation applied to an efficient operation will magnify the efficiency. The second is that automation applied to an inefficient operation will magnify the inefficiency."
            —Bill Gates

Technology is one of the greatest tools we have in business, but it is just that—a tool. The real magic comes in human ingenuity using that tool to create something greater than what a human can do alone.

Is tech actually helping your business become more productive, or creating unnecessary work for your team? It’s time we start that conversation.
