ICANN57 Hyderabad - Update
The ICANN57 meeting is billed to hold at Hyderabad, India. This meeting was originally billed to hold at San Juan, Puerto Rico, but due to the continued spread of the Zika Virus, the meeting venue was relocated to Hyderabad, India. If you recall, in 2014 the venue of the ICANN52 meeting was relocated from Marrakech to Singapore due to the Ebola virus outbreak and earlier this year, the venue of the ICANN56 meeting was relocated from Panama City to Helsinki, Finland due to concerns related to the Zika virus. The changes to the ICANN meeting venues show clearly the commitment of ICANN to the health and safety of its community and Team.
There are indicators that the conduct of the ICANN57 meeting would be different from past meetings. In 2014, the ICANN Board had approved the community’s New Meeting Strategy & Implementation Plan, structuring ICANN’s three yearly meetings. Whilst ICANN56 in Helsinki was the first ever “Policy Forum”, ICANN57 would be the Annual General Meeting. ICANN56 had focused on community policy work, ICANN57 will aim to showcase the ICANN community’s work to a broader global audience, while also having days dedicated for Supporting Organization (SO) and Advisory Committee (AC) work.

2016 INFORMATION COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY AND TELECOMMUNICATION EXHIBITION AND CONFERENCE (ICTEL EXPO 2016)
 The Lagos Chambers Commerce and Industry (LCCI) organized the 2016 edition of the Information Communication Technology and Telecommunication Exhibition and Conference (ICTEL Expo 2016) with the theme “Mobility, Technology and the Nigeria Economy”. The three days Expo held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos from Tuesday 26th to Thursday, 28th July 2016. It aimed at encouraging conversations and the sharing of opinions on innovations and trends, as well as providing an excellent networking opportunity.
The Expo was declared opened by the Honorable Minister of Communication, Barrister Adebayo Shittu. In his Keynote address, Barrister Shittu identified the ICT sector as the only sector that recorded positive growth in the first quarter of 2016, recognizing that Telecommunication and ICT are main drivers for social and economic development.
Barrister Adebayo explained that ICT currently employs more professionals than the oil and gas sector. He explained that the Government is focusing on ICT as it moves towards a more connected Government; Expressing the fact that Government is providing policies that will boost ICT and in turn create more jobs for Citizens. He mentioned that work is ongoing on the development of an ICT University which will be the first of its kind in Africa and encouraged stakeholders and partners to work with the Government in developing the ICT sector in Nigeria.
A key component of the 2016 ICTEL Expo was the exhibitions. Exhibitors across major spectrum of the Nigerian ICT sector showcased products and services at the EXPO. Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) and her Accredited Registrars WhoGoHost and LUFEM Systems Limited were part of the exhibitors at the Expo, offering .ng domain names and other value added services to visitors.
26TH NATIONAL CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITION OF NIGERIA COMPUTER SOCIETY (NCS)
 The Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) held its 26th National Conference and Exhibition from Tuesday, July 19th to Thursday, July 21, 2016 with the theme “Information Technology for National Safety and Security” at the NAF Conference Centre, Abuja.
The Conference was formally declared open by the Honourable Minister of Communications, Barrister Adebayo Shittu.
On the second day of the Conference, the Acting Director General of NITDA, Dr. Vincent Olatunji made a presentation with the theme “The Role of ICT in Diversifying the Nigerian Economy”. He highlighted NITDA’s activities on ICT innovation for the diversification of the Nigerian Economy. He explained that NITDA was set up to develop and regulate ICT in Nigeria and position it to drive the Nigerian Economy. He noted that this is being carried out by investing in Human Capital with the establishment of two subsidiaries: the Office for Local Content and Office for ICT Innovation and Entrepreneurship. He also noted that the ICT sector is a credible alternative to Oil in increasing Nigeria’s GDP.
NiRA was one of the exhibitors at the conference which provided another opportunity to promote the .ng brand. One of NiRA Accredited Registrars, Smartweb was also in attendance to register .ng domains for interested participants.
DOMAIN NAME REGISTRATION IN 2016
The growth of domain name registration in the year 2016 has been on a steady increase. With 2,843 registrations and 1,537 domain renewals in July 2016, these figures are the second best figures on a monthly basis this year. There were 88 domain transfers between the NiRA Accredited Registrars. The slight increase in fresh domain name registrations could be attributed to the new price regime introduced early July 2016. The table and graph below depict the domain name registrations and renewals for the past three months period May, June and July 2014, 2015 and 2016 across the years.
The total domain names count from January to July 2016 include 17,809 registrations and 10,808 renewals.

Top Level Domain Name as a Marketing Tool
The Internet has always been first and foremost about self-expression. Marketing of products and services has shifted from the old conventional method to a new world driven by the Internet with an important tool known as domain name. Having and using a domain name makes communication easier and seamless over the Internet.
