The Uphill Times — August 2016

Once Bitten, Twice Shy

200 insecticide-treated mosquito nets have been provided for the pupils and staff at Uphill School thanks to the fantastic response to our April appeal.

Being able to sleep free from the bites of these disease-carrying insect horrors will give the youngsters the chance of much healthier lives.

Leader(s) Of The Pack

Liddy and Calum’s utterly bonkers motorcycle fund raiser at the end of June — click here for the full report — raised just about all the money we needed to put up a much-needed security fence around the two plots of land that make up the new Uphill Junior School site.

The fence, and the extremely impressive gates, will help secure the site; keeping out both large four-footed domestic animals and any two-footed visitors who might damage the new buildings, accidentally or otherwise.

Exaggeration? During the classroom build, a cow was found wandering around inside the partially built rooms, while keeping curious local children and smaller animals off the wet concrete floors proved quite a challenge, too.

Because they would be so exposed, the glazing of the classroom windows is on hold until the site is securely wired off.

The fence-building — as distinct from fence-louping* — is underway right now.

When it’s finished Uphill Junior School will be a very clearly defined entity.

Whilst we raise funds for more permanent classroom blocks, the existing wooden buildings will be moved into the fenced area during the long holidays at the top of the year to do further duty as temporary classroom for the Kindergarten and lower years of the Primary.

*Loup, louping — Scots word for jumping up or over.
