August is a magical time to fly fish in Colorado, as things begin to transition into Autumn! Throughout the month weather gets a bit cooler, and the water a bit lower...but even more hatches enter the mix! We will see a continuation of Pale Morning Dunn, Yellow Sally, and Caddis Lifecycle activity along with strengthened Red Quill and Trico lifecycle activity and Blue Winged Olives later in the month! In addition we've seen a ton of Hoppers, Flying Ants and other terrestrials. Long story short, things get complicated!
Below please find a simplified fly guide to "matching the hatch" and being successful on the Arkansas and many other Rocky Mountain watersheds in the month of August! You can click each individual pattern to learn a bit more about it or to purchase online. In addition to the below featured lifecycle patterns, don't forget to be prepared with Stonefly Nymphs, Cranefly Larva and Streamers!
Please let us know if you have any questions, and if you would like to really learn the in's and out's of matching the hatch, "streamside fly selection," hire one of our fantastic guides! Call Us Toll Free (888) 994-6743 with any questions or to book a guide. CLICK HERE to book a guide online.
