Being Disciples, Making Disciples in the Name of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World
From the Pastor's Perspective:

Last week, while driving back from Knoxville after a wedding, I turned on National Public Radio. I have been an ardent listener for years. I like some of the public interest stories and shows like the Car Guys and Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me along with the classical and blue grass music. Anyway, the news came on and I listened to what I can only describe as an extremely slanted view of the presidential race. I tend to listen and read a lot of media outlets to try to get a balanced view of things and use to believe that NPR and PTV were some of the best. As I listened, I became incensed in the way things seemed to be presented to detract from one candidate and promote another. I don’t want to pick on just one media outlet. I have found myself doing this with conservative talk radio too. The point is, it made me mad and I found myself yelling at the radio for the way they were presenting things. You see- I had taken the bait. I had allowed my focus to fall completely on this temporal world and had forgotten where my future leads.

It’s hard to be a creature of heaven and earth, to know that we are to fight for fairness, justice and civility as we live our lives here and remember that our future and our attitudes should be that of the Kingdom. The Disciples also struggled with this. We see it in the arguments of who would be first and I believe in the desire for a political messiah for the day. I believe it is important for us to remember that our first allegiance is not to a political party, but to Jesus Christ. It is our faith in him that will bring long term benefits to our lives far more important than our political preferences. I think if I and you, my friend, can do this while working to bring God’s kingdom to others, it is a powerful remedy for the ills of this world that have allowed the powers that be to separate and line us up against each other; to be a voice of reason in the chaos of life. While I want what’s best for my country,  I realize that I am here not by my choice but by my ancestors and the grace God gave them to risk everything for the future. While I love my country and its people, my first love should always be Christ. Maybe next time I won’t take the bait, but will simply turn it off and focus on what I can do to love my God by loving others. That would probably be a whole lot more productive to my health and God’s life in me than to allow myself to be manipulated for the monetary and power benefit of others.
