Mount Grey Adventure Day with Kate Woods

It was a great day out for everyone participating in our last adventure day.  The weather showed up in its stellar form as we set off on our adventure to Mt Grey.  Mountain Biking first and then on foot to the summit.  It was awesome to see everybody get to the top to bag the trig and the snow made for a fun descent!

CP Coach – Kate Woods

Team CP - Athlete Profile - Kate Spurling

Kate is an enthusiastic trail runner who has has been biten by the ultra running bug
"after having so much fun running the Hillary – 34km for my 34th birthday in February, which was my longest distance thus far and was completely out of my comfort zone. I enjoyed it so much, I thought why not run 50km? And the second reason having run several half marathons around the globe, I wanted a change of pace/ scenery and swap disciplines to trail. I couldn’t think of a better way to explore NZ."

CP Coaches Final Thoughts -  Staying Healthy

A couple of weeks back I made the commitment to have a crack at the 1/2 Challenge Wanaka in February.
Since then I have been hit with a severe case of Man Flu and basically done nothing.
As a coach I believe that it is important to stay involved and to put my toe on the start line on a regular basis.  It helps me to relate to those that I am coaching, to test out training theories, trial gear and to learn from my mistakes...

Reflecting on this I turned up to our Tour de Spin class feeling a bit average thinking that it is either going to kill or cure me - turns out it killed me. Subsequently I dug myself a big hole it has taken ages to recover from it.

So based on this experience and since it is the coldest month of the year here is a quick list to ensure that you either don't get sick or quickly bounce back from any illness.

  • Rest early and recover early - take an early day off to get over any illness before it takes hold and get better quicker.
  • Eat well - Plenty of Vitamin C - Capsicum, Tomato and citrus. This week I had a bag of Madarins as prizes at our spin class instead of Crunchie bars...
  • Stay Hydrated - I am not sure how much this makes a difference but Mum always said that I should.
  • Get to bed early - the best way for your body to recover is sleep and the hours before midnight are key.
  • Know what is important - we have a system of ranking our training sessions so ditch the not so important ones and have a go at the key sessions later in the week when you are feeling better.
  • Drop the intensity - hard sessions knock you around more so go a bit easier if you still need to do something.
So make sure that every step is a step forward and have fun playing in the snow!
