One of the best parts of hosting the Crosscut Quilt-Along was hearing from folks about their very first foray into improv. Oh yeah! Meanwhile, I've been itching to do some more myself, and finally got the chance with this month's Seattle MQG's block-of-the-month improv slab, and then a block for our latest guild giving quilt.

WHAT'S UP

Since last issue, I finished Crop Circles, which surprisingly became my most liked photo ever on Instagram!

I've also been doing some {gasp!} applique! First, it was the latest Mighty Lucky challenge, which resulted in A Little Punchy, a traditional quarter log cabin block transformed with a little wonk, some negative space, and that applique. Once I survived that, with my Modern Sampler blocks pieced together, more applique was required to finish up the quilt top. Dare I admit I actually enjoyed it?!

WORTH A READ

ROUND-UP

With my inclination towards applique lately, I gathered some works I love, just for fun. Enjoy!
Can't Cut with Scissors was created by Lisa/sunlight in winter quilts for a Toronto Modern Quilt Guild challenge, as part of a Canadian Quilter's Association show. The floating squares mini (14" square) consisted of solids from a predetermined palette, and was quilted with Lisa's own improv walking foot quilting and the required faced binding.

Anne/playcrafts was inspired by one of her Quilt Design a Day designs, creating Crayola Sunset for a “Crayon Challenge” swap with Baltimore Modern Quilt Guild. [playcrafts]
Cynthia/Cynthia Frenette
created Interference on a background of assorted neutrals, with wonky straight line quilting that covered every area except the purple “interfering” pieces. [cynthiafrenette]
Love that Jill/Pie Lady Quilts mixed improv with a more traditional block and created her Radiant Improv with such striking results! [pieladyquilts]
Creating made fabric by sewing stripes together just to cut them up may not really be Sophie/Luna Lovequilts' favorite thing, but her Factory is certainly a favorite of mine. Her quilting, with a mix of irregular lines and grids, certainly puts it over the top.
Stacey/Peppermint Pinwheels: On the Design Wall made her Blue and White Split Log Cabin for a class she taught. Gotta love her modern take on tradition.

Rachel/Snippets of SweetnessQuiltCon Compilation Quilt is just back from AQS QuiltWeek in Grand Rapids, and I love how Rachel combined elements of her four classes at QuiltCon 2015 to create this quilt, right down to the gorgeous Sashiko Stitching. Improv layered upon improv! [snippetsofsweetness]
Scattered, by Jess/Elven Garden Quilts, started as a class sample for a series of improv workshops, and contains so many ruler-free shapes. The best part is that Jess says this quilt is more 'her' than any quilt she's made, which is totally awesome.

OFF TOPIC

Only after I mentioned in the last issue about being oblivious to the lively discussion surrounding The Modern Quilt Guild's Understanding Copyright, Derivatives, and Design Credit in Quilting, did I realize that reading through the comments on that post alone would enlighten me greatly. That said, I also subsequently appreciated the voices of Leanne/she can quilt, Juliet/The Tartankiwi, Amy/13 Spools, and Caroline/Geometriquilt, and it all left me with alot to think about. I'll confess it also left me with a feeling of overwhelm and even inadequacy for a bit, wondering if I had even one truly original creative bone in my body. I am inspired and influenced by so much around me, it's sometimes hard to see what is really mine.

So that's all I have to say about that .... still mulling it all over.
P.S. Hillary/Entropy Always Wins was kind enough to send me a Leather and Wool Felt Pincushion of her own design, and the fact that she recently posted an Insta-Tute was too good not to share. Just click the link above! [entropyalwayswins]
