Wollongong Writers Festival program launch 

The fourth Wollongong Writers Festival – themed 'Global Conversations' – launches its program with this event: Ashley Hay in conversation with Kate Evans on Ashley's novel, The Railwayman's Wife. Ashley Hay is the author of six books, Kate Evans is the presenter of BooksPlus on ABC Radio National. Tickets: $15. Finger food provided. At Fairy Meadow's Cabbage Tree Hotel, from 6pm.

It’s the last home game of the 2016 season for Helensburgh Tigers, so get along to watch them play Corrimal at Rex Jackson Oval, this Saturday, August 20. U18s play at noon; second grade at 1.30pm; first grade kick off at 3pm.

Stanwell Park film night  

The Helensburgh & District Historical Society presents film footage commissioned as part of an early 20th-century real-estate campaign. Filmed 100 years ago, the silent black-and-white footage shows the train station in Lawrence Hargrave Drive, 1900s beach fashion and the earliest residences, Hillcrest House, the two Stanwell Houses and Bonnie View. Stanwell Park, The Gem of the Australian Coast will be screened at the Stanwell Park Anglican Church Hall in Stanwell Avenue on Friday, August 19 (sold out!) and Saturday 20th from 7.30pm. Meet the author 

Thirroul author Sean Williams will speak about his latest children’s book, My Nanna Nelly will tour the Illawarra Tomorra, at Wollongong Central Library. String Family show  

Helensburgh’s travelling musicians, the String Family, will park their caravan at the CWA Hall in Stanwell Park for an afternoon of classical and modern music. Award-winning violinist Sarah Moir – a former member of the internationally acclaimed String Angels – and her husband, cellist Joel, will perform with their children on August 27, from 3pm. Book online or pay at the door: $25 adult, $15 child, $70 family, $20 pensioner/senior.

Jamboree Creative Escape

Last chance! There are just 10 tickets left to the Wild Rumpus Jamboree, a creative escape from 2-4 September at Mount Keira Scout Camp. The event will bring together artists, foodies and creatives wanting to escape the stresses of daily life and learn about photography, woodwork, baking, looming, circus, art, weaving, storytelling, permaculture, bush tucker and more. Helensburgh Library closed 

To replace the library’s ageing service desk, Wollongong City Council will close Helensburgh Library from 1pm on Thursday, September 8 until 2pm on Monday, September 12. The library book returns chute will remain open. Concert for Kurt 

Book your tickets now to a massive concert to help injured local rugby league player Kurt Drysdale and his family. The concert – including such fantastic acts as Hoodoo Gurus, Jon Stevens, Bryce Cohen and more – will be held at Sharks Leagues club on October 14. Tickets are on sale now at Sharks Leagues club.
