Victoria Atkins MP
Newsletter - Summer 2016

The saying goes that a week is a long time in politics. The last few weeks have reduced that to a day!

On 23rd June, the British people voted to leave the European Union. Within hours of the poll closing, David Cameron announced that he would stand down as Prime Minister. On 13th July, following a short and intense leadership campaign, Theresa May was invited by HM The Queen to form a new government as Prime Minister.

I am very pleased that our country will have strong, proven leadership in our new Prime Minister. In my work on the Home Affairs Select Committee and on the Investigatory Powers Bill, I have witnessed first-hand her steadiness under fire, her resolve and her sheer competence. I know she will provide the focussed leadership we need, not just in Brexit negotiations, but also in her determination to make Britain "a country that works for everyone".

I have been stopped by many people on my travels around the constituency who have wanted to pass on their good wishes for her premiership.

I have already met the Prime Minister to discuss issues of local concern, including rural and coastal deprivation, and I look forward to working with her to address these matters.

Home Office News!
I am pleased to have been invited to join the Home Office team of Ministers as a Parliamentary Private Secretary following my service on the Home Affairs Select Committee and 2 Committees on the Investigatory Powers Bill.

I will be working directly to Brandon Lewis MP, Minister of State for Policing and Fire Brigade issues, as well as assisting other Ministers in the Department.

I am honoured to take up this unpaid position as it fits in with my activities in the House of Commons to date. But it is also especially helpful to my constituents in Louth & Horncastle as law, order and security issues are of vital importance locally.

I am planning to arrange regular contact with police and fire officers in Lincolnshire, as well as Marc Jones, our recently-elected Police & Crime Commissioner.
Looking Ahead...
On Friday 9th September, I will be holding Louth and Horncastle’ s inaugural Jobs and Apprenticeships Fair.

There are many talented constituents looking for work or to develop their careers, as well as successful employers who want to recruit locally. Local and national employers are supporting the Fair, including Luxus, BAE and Butlins, as is the Job Centre. If you are seeking work or would like to improve your skills, please email me for further details – victoria@victoriaatkins.org.uk. The fair will be held at the Meridian Centre in Louth from 10am onwards.

I will continue to try to resolve constituents’ casework, helping those who have contacted me about problems affecting them or their families.

If you would like to book a surgery appointment please do get in touch.

Travels around the constituency
The summer recess allows me to escape Westminster to return home to the constituency to concentrate on local matters.

My plans for the recess range from the serious to the fun.

There have been reports that criminal gangs are targeting farms to steal very expensive machinery and tractors. I have met local police officers and visited Louth Police Station last week to discuss this and other issues. Please sign up to Lincs Alert to receive alerts from the police and be sure to lock all outbuildings and machinery. Constant vigilance will help to defeat these gangs.

On a lighter note, my family and I enjoyed attending the Sutton on Sea Parade, along with thousands of other people. It was a credit to the village and to those volunteers who worked hard to make it such a success. I also had the honour of judging the fancy dress competition – one of the trickiest tasks in political life - at the ever popular Revesby Country Show.

The sun shone on the competitors and their ponies – all of whom looked wonderful. It was a close run thing but the Red Arrows pony flew to win first prize!
