The saying goes that a week is a long time in politics. The last few weeks have reduced that to a day!
On 23rd June, the British people voted to leave the European Union. Within hours of the poll closing, David Cameron announced that he would stand down as Prime Minister. On 13th July, following a short and intense leadership campaign, Theresa May was invited by HM The Queen to form a new government as Prime Minister.
I am very pleased that our country will have strong, proven leadership in our new Prime Minister. In my work on the Home Affairs Select Committee and on the Investigatory Powers Bill, I have witnessed first-hand her steadiness under fire, her resolve and her sheer competence. I know she will provide the focussed leadership we need, not just in Brexit negotiations, but also in her determination to make Britain "a country that works for everyone".
I have been stopped by many people on my travels around the constituency who have wanted to pass on their good wishes for her premiership.
I have already met the Prime Minister to discuss issues of local concern, including rural and coastal deprivation, and I look forward to working with her to address these matters.
