Going Green Workshop & Webinar

Join us in person or via computer as we host our first Going Green webinar! The webinar will provide an overview of native plant options for marinas, an introduction to organic lawn care, and best practices for green cleaning. Experts from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Good Nature Organic Lawn Care, and Cuyahoga Soil & Water Conservation District will be on hand to provide examples and answer questions to "go green" at your marina!

Help us improve our program! We are looking for feedback from our currently certified and pledged Ohio Clean Marinas about how our program is now, and what you would like to see from us in the future. One survey per marina please. Please follow this link to complete the survey.
Cedar Point Pervious Concrete Installation Demo
Observe the installation process of an effective green infrastructure practice & learn about the benefits. Please join Erie Soil & Water Conservation District, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, and Ohio Concrete Association on Tuesday, September 13 from 8:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. as we demonstrate the placement of a pervious concrete slab and educate on the many benefits and considerations of pervious concrete placements.
This will be a free opportunity to enhance your knowledge of the benefits of pervious concrete and how we can use this pavement and others like it to assist in bringing cleaner waters to the area as we treat stormwater runoff with more diligence and concern. Clean Vessel Act Pumpout Grant
Now is the time to prepare your pumpout grant application! The ODNR Division of Watercraft administers the Clean Vessel Act for the state of Ohio; they also provide match so that marinas who receive grant funding are eligible for 100% reimbursement of a pumpout. Find the CVA grant info under Boating Facility Grants on the ODNR Division of Watercraft page.
Funding for Abandoned or Derelict Vessel
We have a request from our friends with the Boat US Foundation for abandoned vessels in need of removal. They are looking for:
- An abandoned vessel in Ohio waters of Lake Erie
- Recent wreck, preferably 10 years or newer
- Bonus points for wrecks in environmentally sensitive areas or with attached nets that continue to pose a threat to wildlife
The Boat U.S. Foundation has a grant from the NOAA Marine Debris program and would like to use the funds to remove an abandoned vessel. If you have or know of any derelict or abandoned vessels that meet the above criteria, please contact us at ohiocleanmarinas@osu.edu.

FEMA Flood Mapping
The Great Lakes Coastal Flood Study (GLCFS) is a multi-year project led by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to put a wide range of decision-making data in the hands of Great Lakes coastal communities. Flood maps and flood risk information can help identify high-risk areas and guide comprehensive land use planning and safe capital investments to mitigate the severity of future losses.
The release of these draft flood hazard work maps is slated to begin in July 2016, and communities will have an opportunity to download and review them using the Lake Erie Work Map Data Viewer. Additional opportunities for input will be provided through a series of Flood Risk Review meetings that will begin in early August and run through early- to mid-September 2016.
Once the meetings have taken place, a 60-day comment period will provide even more opportunities for communities to provide their input on the draft work maps.

Clean Boater Corner

With fall approaching, so is the thought of winterizing our vessels. Here are some simple yet effective ways to minimize pollution while putting your boat away for the season.
- Power wash the bottom of vessels using only water, no soaps or solvents.
- Use the pink colored propylene glycol antifreeze, which is less toxic, rather than the blue-green colored ethylene glycol antifreeze, which is highly toxic and can harm animals that ingest it.
- Fill fuel tanks to 90 percent of capacity during winter storage to reduce condensation buildup.
- Consider adding a fuel stabilizer so that you will not have problems disposing of stale fuel in the spring.
- Flush winterizing agents and antifreeze from the engine prior to launch each season and recycle or dispose of properly.

What you need to know about HABs
|
|
Harmful algal blooms have been brought into the national spotlight as large blooms have been observed in Lake Erie and elsewhere throughout the country. While much is yet to be studied, Ohio has made significant advances in understanding blooms, as well as developing best practices to help prevent them.
|

OSHA and EPA Raise Fines
|
|
From the Association of Marina Industries: EPA and OSHA are increasing their penalties as a result of the Federal Civil Penalties Inflation Adjustment Act Improvements Act which passed in November 2015. The Act requires fines to increase with inflation. While this requirement was previously in place, not all organizations followed that mandate, but under this Act they can no longer ignore inflation. Both agencies penalty increases went into effect on August 1, 2016. Now is the time to make sure you are complying with OSHA and EPA rules.
