designing designers...what are you great at?
Parti* Notes by Leslie LaskinReese

Dear <<First Name>>,

designing designers

Have you ever asked someone to say something nice about you? It feels awkward. Get over it and ask anyway. It's a great way to help you see yourself more clearly. That's one of my suggestions about how to be your best designer, and it applies to non-designers too. Figure out what you're good at and focus on it! Make it even better. Check out the story if you want more suggestions. Who doesn't want to be better at being themselves?

want to ride bikes?
I'm putting together a cycling group, Bikes to Barns. We will do weekend rides, 20-30 miles per day with moderate climbing. The rides will take us through farmland with food stops at farms. Group size will be limited by the overnight accommodations. If you're interested, sign up here and I'll keep you posted. I'm hoping to get the first ride together for early October.

Have you checked out forums on my website yet? Ask questions, answer questions. It's all new to me so we'll see how it goes.

I hope you're having a great summer....keep in touch,
Leslie

There are a couple of methods that have been developed in the last few years that seem to yield better results. read more

designing politics

If you live here in the good ol’ US of A, your feed is full of he said she said. And sometimes he did she didn’t. Or he said she did but she didn’t really because he did. It’s gotten pretty raucous and very unpleasant. So let’s focus on the whimsical designerly aspect of this presidential race and forget about the personalities. read more

five interesting things

1. DESIGN: Restaurants as factories...are we done yet? Enough with the Edison bulbs, terrible acoustics, uncomfortable chairs.

2. WORK: Working on your resume? Show them you are a lifelong learner.
  • My brilliant, and often hilarious, cousin-in-law is also a tech recruiter. His tips here apply to every business sector, not just tech. Designers, check it out! Job Tips for Geeks
3. FOOD: Bread, beautiful bread. And ice cream, cake, coffee...beautiful details too. check out that counter edge.
  • Tartine Manufactory Is an Artisanal Utopia in the Mission. Eater SF
4. FOOD: Does meat need to be the main attraction? I'd prefer to see it in a supporting role. And apparently so would your body.
  • Training a New Generation of Chefs to Cook With Less Meat. The Culinary Institute of America wants to 'flip' the role of protein in restaurants. Takepart.com
5. WORK: This man earns his living filing serial ADA lawsuits. There must be a better way.

*In architectural criticism the parti is the assumption made that informs a design as well as the choice of approach when realizing the scheme.  The big idea.
