Featured Member of the Week

Jody Hopkins, Executive Director, Texas Association of Charitable Clinics
Number of Years as Executive Director: 6 years
How did you become interested in this work?
I actually came to the charitable clinic world as a volunteer. There was a clinic north of Houston that needed a volunteer social worker so I starting helping out there. Soon, I was hired as the full time social worker, then later became the director.
What's the best advice that you have ever received?
Do not think that you have to do everything that comes across your desk! Let’s face it, ED’s are a pretty driven group of people that want to get things done. Sometimes we can get lost in the ‘clutter’ that comes across our desks and lose site of the real priorities.

One Voice Member Society of St. Vincent de Paul Seeks Strategic Partners to Assist with Basic Needs Benefits Registration

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SSVDP) is seeking a strategic partner to assist them with benefits registration for those who are seeking basic needs assistance. Over 1,000 SSVDP volunteers provided over $5.7 million in basic needs assistance and services to 145,000 Central Texans in FY2015. Benefits registration is a critical gap that Society of St. Vincent de Paul is looking to fill. SSVDP would like to begin with Travis County and is looking to expand to access folks across the 25 counties of Central Texas covered in the geographic scope of the Diocese of Austin. SSVDP would like to explore options for sending referrals to non profit organizations, allowing that organization's staff or volunteers to conduct registration events at the SSVDP north Austin service center, "Train the Trainer" classes, or other creative options for maximizing access to available benefits. For more information contact Stacy at stacy@ssvdp.org or call (512) 251-6995.

Meet the Finalists for the New Chief Equity Officer Position for the City of Austin

The City of Austin announced the names of four candidates for the new Chief Equity Officer position that will help ensure City programs and services meet the needs of all Austin residents. Candidates include:
  • Parisa Fetehi, Head of Community Impact Programs and Investments, Google Fiber
  • Veronica Briseno Lara, Director Small Minority Business Resources Department, City of Austin
  • Brion Oaks, Vice President of Health Equity, Southwest Affiliate, American Heart Association
  • Kazique Prince, Senior Policy Advisor & Education Coordinator, Office of Mayor Steve Adler
Those under consideration will be introduced at a Town Hall meeting August 25 where the public will hear presentations from each candidate and have a chance to talk informally with them. Feedback from the Town Hall meeting and interviews will help determine which candidate or candidates are then interviewed by City Manager Marc A. Ott. The Chief Equity Officer will shape an office that will be focused internally on the City organization as well as externally on the needs of the greater Austin community. The person will look at the City of Austin organization to identify gaps and disparities in services and programs and help create a plan for each department. The Equity Officer will also work with community groups to help them navigate the City organization to ensure equal access to City programs and services.

When: Thursday, August 25th 6:30-8:30pm

Texans Care for Children Hosts Second Forum in Children's Policy Series:
Building Healthy Foundations for Young Kids

The first meeting discussed the health of children in foster care and the juvenile justice system and focused on using data to improve outcomes. The second session, Building Healthy Foundations for Young Kids will examine policy opportunities to improve early childhood health and development, including access to health care before, during, and after pregnancy; child care quality and safety; and early childhood interventions for kids with disabilities. A panel of speakers will be followed by a group discussion to identify current needs and policy opportunities to promote early childhood health and development.
