The Big 30

We are excited to announce the launch of The Big 30th, a new project to celebrate Heart n Soul's 30 birthday, funded by the Heritage Lottery Foundation. We'll be working with 30 participants, volunteers, staff and artists to to tell their stories through interviews, artwork, film, performance or music.

These stories will be added to the London Metropolitan Archives and used to create an interactive installation in Deptford in 2017. The installation will be part of lots of different Heart n Soul activities happening in Deptford to celebrate our 30 birthday.

We'll be kicking off The Big 30 at this year's Beautiful Octopus Club Festival and we want YOU to get involved! Visit our video booth to share your memories of the club festival and be part of the story!

The Beautiful Octopus Club Festival

We've been getting ready for the return of The Beautiful Octopus Club Festival which will be back at the Royal Festival Hall for an amazing 9th year!

We've got some great performances planned. The night will start with a performance by the Heart n Soul choir. The lineup also features a new film created by Heart n Soul co-founder Pino Frumiento, poetry by Allsorts co-producer Peter Brown and performances from Heart n Soul bands The Fish PoliceElectric Fire (above) and Too Hot For Candy.

There's going to be so much more to see and do and the club is FREE and open to all! To see what's on and find out more, visit our website here

An evening with

Heart n Soul artists Lizzie Emeh and Electric Fire collaborated with the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) for an evening of live music.

Lizzie worked with Sound and Music's Embedded composer Bobbie-Jane Gardner to develop some of her music tracks for the performance. Electric Fire collaborated with four musicians from the LSO to make some brand new music for the night as well as performing their own songs.

Check out photos from the night here.

On the road

Heart n Soul diva Lizzie Emeh travelled to Germany to perform at Boulevart Festival and Stage Festival. Lizzie performed tracks with musicians Rikki Jodelko and Ned Smith.

Too Hot For Candy (above) also played a gig at Germany's Broacher Schloss Nacht festival. They performed two new songs, 'Coming from Ghana' and 'Candyland'. Check out their brand new website here

Both Lizzie and Too Hot For Candy will be performing at The Beautiful Octopus Club Festival on Friday 9 September.

Dean Rodney

Fish Police frontman Dean Rodney (above) has been chosen as one of Southbank Centre's Change Makers - people who have worked on projects that help to touch and change people's lives. Dean performed with The Fish Police at the celebration for the change makers at the Royal Festival Hall.

Dean has also been in the studio, experimenting with Mi.mu gloves, a piece of wearable technology that makes digital music. Dean will have the gloves for three months to make exciting new music. Stay tuned!

Taking Part

Do Your Own Thing

Do Your Own Thing participants worked with filmmaker Simon Panrucker to produce a new promo film. They took part in a workshop to come up with ideas for the film that included explosions and superheroes!

The film also features art made by participants and a soundtrack recorded by Do Your Own Thing band Electric Fire. Check out the new promo video here

Do Your Own Thing will be back this Saturday 20 August when they will be getting ready for a special showcase performance at The Beautiful Octopus Club Festival on Friday 9 September. We can't wait!

Allsorts

After a short break, Allsorts was back this month with The Celebrate Season. Participants got creative with paper plates and paints in the art session and sung feel-good classics in the choir session. They also took part in a relaxing Puffing and Wooling session led by Heart n Soul artist Tilley Milburn.

Next up, Allsorts participants will be getting ready for a showcase at The Beautiful Octopus Club Festival as well as working with artist Will Dickie to create pop-up performances for the festival.
