Folklife Flashes
September 2016

Celebrate our state's folklife and traditions!

Message from the NC Folk Staff

September is here, and so is the National Folk Festival! At NC Folk, we've been focusing most of our energy over the last few months on producing One State, Many Worlds, a celebration of the folklife of North Carolina's newcomer, immigrant, and refugee populations.

Please join us at the Festival, which is September 10 and 11 in downtown Greensboro. The Festival is free, and parking is easy! In this month's newsletter, you can check out a few more of the fabulous artists, musicians, and cooks who will be there!

Orquesta K'Che––Going Beyond Fusion

FEATURED ARTIST

Orquesta K'Che, a Latin dance band based in North Carolna's Triangle region, is the brainchild of Puerto Rican musician Billy Marrero. At age six, the band leader and percussionist began a long musical journey that would eventually carry him to Holly Springs, North Carolina. In the years since, he was built a band of musicians from all over the U.S. and Latin America, going beyond the concept of fusion to create a new sound altogether that has something to say about ethnicity, national identity, and migration.

Make sure to check out their artist profile here, their promo video and other performances, and see them Saturday, 1:45 PM on the North Carolina Traditions Stage.

Diali Cissokho & Kaira Ba
MEDIA CORNER

Diali Cissokho & Kaira Ba "take West African dance music into new territory—literally, the North Carolina Piedmont. That’s where Cissokho, a griot born to a family of professional musicians in Senegal, makes his transplanted home."

Diali Cossokho and Kaira Ba will be performing at the National Folk Festival this weekend, where they will not only perform their music for audiences but will also be featured in workshops and panels where Cissokho will talk about his life and music. Check out this video of the band performing at a TED Talk at UNC in 2014.

The Art of Making Pupusas

NC Folk is proud to work with so many chefs, artists, and musicians from across the state for this year's National Folk Festival in Greensboro. In April of this year, Margarita Delgado, who owns and operates Manny's Universal Cafe in Greensboro, took some time to show the NC Folk team how to make pupusas. Margarita served food at the press conference for the event in July and now you can learn her recipe in this video!
FRESH FROM THE FIELD

This Is My Home Now: The Montagnard Community in Greensboro

At this year's Festival, filmmaker Mariah Kramer will be showing her documentary This Is My Home Now, about four Montagnard young people whose families moved to North Carolina from the highlands of Vietnam. Mariah and some of the folks with whom she made the film will be showing their work in our One State, Many Worlds area of the festival and talking about their experiences. Click here to check out our field blog and watch a trailer for the film!

Ethnomimesis: Folklife and the Representation of Culture

FEATURED PRODUCT

Festivals and performances have long been a focal point for the academic and public study of folklore. In this classic text, Robert Cantwell explores how individuals and groups create, re-create, and represent culture. In particular, he focuses on folklife festivals as sites not only for showcasing cultural performances, but also for creating new ones. Purchase your copy here from NC Folk...
