Sustainable Neighbourhoods News

Jewells Area Sustainable Neighbourhood Group
Welcome to our newest member group!

We are very pleased to officially welcome the Jewells Area Sustainable Neighbourhood Group to the Alliance.

They have been organising their very first event, coming up this Saturday 20 August, 10am - 12noon.  Drop by to say hello and find out all about local weeds, sustainable gardening, and encouraging native birds to your garden.
Working together with local groups
The Cardiff Area, and Greater Charlestown Sustainable Neighbourhood Groups enjoyed a lovely day with neighbours at their respective National Tree Day events in July.  Both groups made valuable contributions by offering promotional assistance, and volunteer hands to help out local community groups.

An enthusiastic team turned up to remove weeds and replant natives at the Cardiff South Wetland Landcare site (image below).  Landcare volunteers appreciated the extra turnout and help to prevent the spread of weeds at their site.

And volunteers from the Greater Charlestown Sustainable Neighbourhood Group helped the Pit Pony Park community to plant and mulch a range of native trees to provide shade and amenity at their local park.

It's great to see Sustainable Neighbourhood groups collaborating with and supporting other community groups in their neighbourhood.

The West Wallsend District Landcare Group (formed in partnership with their local Sustainable Neighbourhood Group) will be holding a Landcare planting day:
Sunday 21 August, 9.30am
Meet in the park at the western end of Elizabeth St, Holmesville.

They'd love your assistance!  Visit their facebook page or email for more information.

  • Classic car show
  • Community information
  • Historic walks and displays
  • Wangi Public School Family Fun Day
  • Art exhibitions
  • Crafts and music
  • Sailing Regatta
  • and more!
You can even purchase your very own piece of history - the Wangi Centenary Medallion.  There are only 5 left of the 100 uniquely numbered medals.

Cardiff Car Boot Sale Success
The Cardiff Area Sustainable Neighbourhood Group held a wonderful Car Boot Sale on the weekend.  Lots of locals came out to support the event, enjoy the sunshine, and grab a bargain.

The event incorporated opportunity for a range of community groups - the Salvation Army had a Coffee Cart, the Cardiff Scouts held a BBQ, and the Cardiff Men's Shed were spreading the word about what they can do for the community.  Cardiff Fire and Rescue Service visited for over an hour, allowing local children to clamber in and over their fire tanker.

Stallholders had a great time and raised some cash, and attendees said they are keen to see it become a regular event.

The next round of Council's Environmental Sustainability Grants are now open, and close on 29 August.
