ST PAUL'S COLLEGE NEWS
Years 7 - 13 Catholic Champagnat Marist School for Boys
Headmaster's Message

"MOTHERS and their SONS"
Mothers are extremely important in the development of a well functioning man. But adolescence (High school) is a hard time for parents especially mothers.

I came across this article  recently.
           I invite you to read.

Mothers, are you seeing the man in your son?

"Men respond to respect. And there’s a man inside every boy. But do mums know this? This may explain their confusion and sense of disconnection from their precious boys as their sons grow.

As I talk to mothers and tell them that there is a man in the boy, some respond with curiosity about who that man might be.

As one mother said, "He can be 'all boy' one second and the other the most sweet little thing ever."

Note her contrast: The "all boy" is not sweet to her. Another mother writes, “It seems easier to give ‘love talk’ to our two grown girls because we're both in the pink.

It was very easy to ‘love’ my boys when they were younger, but as they grew I’ve found that I had to switch gears.”

As they grow, boys need to be treated with more doses of respect as compared to the doses of love you extend to them.

Yes, mothers need to go beyond their love and apply unconditional positive regard toward their sons.

This is not about respecting bad behavior, but about acting with respect — particularly as you discipline, but also whenever possible.
"Men respond to respect..."

No boy responds to the feeling that Mum does not respect who he is as a human being.

When a mother and son get into a conflict — usually a stressful event for both — the son may feel more disrespected than he feels unloved because he craves respect more than love.

For this reason a mum needs to ask herself, Are my words going to sound respectful or disrespectful to my son?

Every mum needs to recognize and accept that her son filters disagreements with her through his respect grid. He is not wrong for this, just different.

The good news is that once Mum sees this need in her boy, she can use this information with prudence. When upset, she need only say, "I am not trying to show you disrespect when I confront your misbehavior."

Just using the word "disrespect" may ease his stress.

Try it and watch what happens. " (Emerson Eggerichs)

PASTORAL CARE
ATTENDANCE
The Target for this term for every student at 90% attendance. Any students who fall under this target will need to make up time in the first 3 days of the holiday. This means no more than 4.5 days absent whatever the reason so please encourage being here every day.

If your son is away you must contact the College. If we do not hear from you we email and text to advise. This costs the College both time and money so ask for your support in being proactive.

LATENESS
  1. If your son is late for an unjustified reason, you will be emailed that day. We will record this and report it in the Weekly Engagement Report
  2. A second instance will result in your son being required to work in the Withdrawal room for the day.
  3. A further instance will result in withdrawal to the Deans Office and a meeting being held before return to normal classes
  4. A further instance will result in a referral to the Deputy Head where a possible outcome is a recommendation of a stand down to the Headmaster.

WITHDRAWAL
We have been focused on further instilling the notion that disturbing others learning or not learning yourself in a class is never acceptable. Behaviors which we see as being unacceptable are
  1. Being Late to Class
  2. Not Having the correct equipment – Correct book – one book for each class, Pens, Calculator, PE gear including sneakers
  3. Misbehaviour - not following Teachers’ instructions, remaining on task, not disturbing others
Each week Late to Class and Not having Equipment are reset to 0, however Misbehavior is tracked with staged consequences similar to lateness above if change has not occurred.

EPro 8 CHALLENGE

On Monday the 15th of August St Pauls sent 2 teams of year 7 and 8 boys to participate in the annual Epro 8 challenge.

This was the first time St Paul's College has participated in the challenge.

Our boys were up against 14 other teams who had all been part of this competition before.

The boys had a slow start getting used to the variety of equipment they had, e.g.  electric engines, circuits, metal rods with joinery and so on; however once they got used to the equipment they raced ahead!

Both teams completed in multiple challenges in the two and a half hour time frame, and gave some more experienced teams a run for their money.

Team brotherhood at one stage climbed the Winner's Board to 2nd place and looked like they would qualify for the regional finals, unfortunately in the final minutes of the competition another team overtook them.

Team Brotherhood (left to right) : Tevita Tupou, Vontae Hamiora, Salesi Foketi and Mark Tautele.
Team Courage (Left to right): Denzel Seuala, Cornelius Aupito , Kyan and Christian Schaaf.

Our final placings were Team Brotherhood 5th overall and Team Courage 10th overall.  The young men did St Paul's College proud with their exemplary behaviour and attitude.

Good effort gentlemen!

A huge thank you to the parents that provided transport and attended the event!

OPERATION FOOTY COPS

Students of St Paul's College helped cook a free barbeque at a local junior Rugby game at Cox's Bay park. According to the NZ Herald on Sunday "Operation Footy Cops" is an initiative to that involves policing teams being present at weekend matches in a bid to discourage negative sideline behaviour.  Constable John To'ua-Kalava fronted a small group of police, supported by Tevita Uilou, Anthony Meleisea, Kalala Raas and Suasi Gale from St Paul's, who manned the barbeque handing out well deserved nourishment to the players and supporters. Follow the link for the story.

MUSIC UPDATE

The Stand Up Stand Out (SUSO) competitions have been well represented by St. Paul’s this year. Year 9 student Selevasio Tu’ima has made it through to the finals as a solo vocalist.

He will be performing at the Vodafone Events Centre, Friday 26th August at 6:30pm. Anyone is welcome to be part of the audience. It will be well worth the small door charge to see some of the amazing talent that is being seen in Auckland schools.

As part of the promotions for SUSO 2016, Selevasio and Nainz performed for John Campbell on Checkpoint. Click on the link to see Selevasio's amazing performance!

This week’s Mass was an amazing experience; seeing and hearing the whole school singing with passion and vigour as they worshipped God through music.

This is also a good opportunity to thank the Year 11 musicians who were part of the band which provided the music for Mass. They led the school well and we were all blessed by the good music.

SPORTS UPDATE

1st XIII RUGBY LEAGUE
Well done to the 1st XIII Rugby league team (pictured below), defending their Auckland title at Mt Smart last week, beating Wesley college 23-10. Sione Ngahe and his team have worked hard since March and it was great reward for their efforts to celebrate with a large equally proud group of supporters. The fast & physical game was played in great spirits by both teams in front of a large crowd and was a great night for Rugby League.
Next target - Nationals!  Good luck gentlemen and well done on the result, you deserve it!

Our U19 basketball team's season has come to an end, unfortunately missing out in the last few games by only a few points. This team have worked hard all year with many convincing victories. Year 10 Luke Kelemete was a consistent stand out, well supported by Andrew Koloamatangi, Keneti Rowe & Jacob Smith. Most of this team are Year 12 and below, suggesting big things are yet to come for this group in 2017.

Excellent season gentlemen.

The Year 7/8's have been busy lately with outstanding efforts on the basketball court and rugby league field in recent tournaments. Starting with some impressive performances at the central zone Basketball tournament, Daniel Smith showcased his skills on the court emulating his older brother Jacob's success with the 1st basketball team. The Smith brothers are talented cross code athletes and an asset to the college.

Yesterday our Year 7/8's competed in the central zone rugby league tournament (pictured above). Back to back games all day was a tough ask for our young team but they displayed typical St Paul's grit, going through the round robin with only 1 loss to traditional powerhouses Wesley intermediate.
A grand final rematch vs Wesley intermediate was on the cards, however our energy couldn't match a very slick Wesley team. Outstanding performers were Peter Easthope, Daniel Smith, Denzel Seuala and captain, Salesi Foketi. I have been continuously impressed with the team work, sportsmanship and efforts of Year 7/8s - from what I observed yesterday, these boys are destined for big things in years to come.

So as our busy winter draws to a close, it provides an opportunity to reflect on our 2016 season. According to the stats, our overall winning percentage is well up on 2015.  Our impressive (Award winning) coaching staff and students have worked hard to raise the bar on last season, and will again evaluate what we can do better moving forwards, as we continue to chase excellence on the field and in the classroom.

Thanks for your support for the 2016 winter sports raffle!

With the funds raised we were able to purchase much needed training equipment, medical supplies, kicking tees, gear bags, match balls and more.

Congratulations to prize winners Miriam, Grant and Tonga!
