A time to remember

World Day of Remembrance is an annual event hosted worldwide in honour of road crash victims, as well as an opportunity to thank all the medical and emergency personnel for all their hardwork.

This year's theme is "Vital Post Crash Actions", specifically looking at medical care, justice and investigation.

Themes for World Day
Theme for 2016 Vital Post-Crash Care

This theme relates to the call in Pillar 5 of the “Global Plan for the Decade of Action” for much needed improvements in the post-crash response.
Proposed actions relate to the immediate time after a crash – to save lives and reduce severity of impact:
1.    Medical: Develop hospital trauma care systems and good practices and quality assurance on trauma care systems, provide early rehabilitation and support to the injured and bereaved to minimize both physical and psychological trauma.  “Right patient to the right Hospital, at the right time.”
2.    Investigation: Encourage a thorough investigation into the crash as well as to the all-important issue of crash cause and response to it: SADD ask for this to be done at every crash scene, and not only where 5 or more people die. SADD also ask for both drivers to be tested for alcohol &/or drugs at every crash scene.
3.    Justice: The application of an effective legal response to road deaths and injuries…and therefore fair settlements and justice for the bereaved and injured. This should include post traumatic counselling.

One of our main mandates as a road safety organization is fighting for the rights of victims and giving them a voice by raising awareness.

We ask South Africa, especially the Durban community to support Spiga Restaurant,'s upcoming event this weekend.
It will be a festival of arts, suitable for families, and will be a chance to give a helping hand towards helping road crash victims.

If you are interested and would like to come, please RSVP via their Facebook Event page.
Attendees can expect to be spoiled with delicious food, great music and informative presentations from various stakeholders within the road safety community.

There will be a memorial wall installation with street artist Giffy Duminy, so please bring photos of your loved ones. You will also have a chance to write messages and put down flowers in their memory.

If you are not able to come, any donations are welcome.

Lights! Camera! Action!

As part of our awareness campaign for World Day of Remembrance, SADD has been filming a new documentary that is looking at the opinions from professionals in medical care, investigation and justice.
We believe it is important to highlight some of the challenges we may be facing in our communities to effectively enforce laws as well as giving the right medical to patients

This DVD will be shown at the event, however if you are interested in viewing it please contact Mellisa on mellisa@sadd.org.za or 0815296546

You can play a part too!

We encourage you to host a small remembrance ceremony in your community, either in your local churches or group gatherings with friends and family.

The SADD team can provide you with prayers or poems to recite and also SADD angels if you have lost a loved one and would like to light a candle in their memory

Please contact Mellisa at mellisa@sadd.org.za, 081 529 6546 or 033 343 1853
