Total Healthcare’s Green Prescription promotion is really hitting home. Our provider's patients are reporting the benefits; not just that, they are singing praises to the Green Rx. If they’re happy, we’re happy too!
One of those over the moon with her achievements is Elsa Watkinson (pictured), a Total Healthcare registered patient at East Tamaki Healthcare Dawson Rd for 14 years. For Elsa, being referred to Green Prescription has been life-changing.
“This is the best thing that has happened to me. It’s better than winning Lotto,” Elsa says.
Elsa’s GP, Dr Anju Yogan, referred Elsa to the 10-week exercise and nutrition course run at Total Healthcare’s STAR Care at Otara Mall. Upon graduation Elsa says she has more energy, she’s sleeping better and her asthma has improved.
East Tamaki Healthcare Bairds Rd patient Ingi Tusini-Rex joins Elsa in her praise. She enjoys Green Prescription so much, she’s done the course twice.
“I have learned so much. When I started I was 145kg, now I’m 135kg. It’s slow but it’s looking good for me,” Ingi says.
Any Total Healthcare patients with a high BMI, diabetes, CVD, a respiratory condition or a stable mental health condition, are able to benefit from Green Prescription.

Double gold for Cornerstone accreditation

It’s official, all of Total Healthcare’s provider general practices are now fully Cornerstone accredited.
Total Healthcare received confirmation this month that its newer practices Kolmar Rd (pictured), Botany South and Takanini have achieved accreditation.
This achievement means that Total Healthcare is the only PHO with all its practices accredited through the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioner’s gold standard quality programme, Cornerstone, and the only PHO with all its GP clinics on the regular accreditation cycle.
What’s more, Total Healthcare has achieved this milestone before. In 2007, when the PHO had just nine clinics, all became Cornerstone accredited at a special ceremony at the NZMA GP CME conference in Rotorua.

Come to a Gandhi Nivas fundraiser next month

Otahuhu’s early domestic violence intervention programme, Gandhi Nivas, is holding a fundraiser on 16 September, and you’re invited!
In case you haven’t heard, Gandhi Nivas is a programme that provides emergency housing, counselling and social services for men who have either been issued with a police safety order, or are otherwise involved in police matters related to family violence. Early studies from Massey University researchers show recidivism in residents is trending down.
Gandhi Nivas a partnership among Nirvana Foundation, Counties Manukau Police and Sahaayta Counselling & Social Support. Total Healthcare provides support to this project and we’d like to invite you to do so as well.
The house also ran an open day this month attracting representatives from social services and the community. Above Sahaayta counsellor Zoya Salim Kara shows Child Youth and Family staffers around Gandhi Nivas.

Ranjna Patel top five EY entrepreneur finalist

We’re incredibly proud to announce that Nirvana Health Group Director and Total Healthcare PHO Executive Trustee Ranjna Patel is a finalist in the Ernst & Young (EY) Entrepreneur of the Year competition.
The top five finalists and category winners were announced this month. The EY Entrepreneur of the Year is one of the world’s most prestigious business awards.
“It’s an honour to be recognised among such an amazing group of business people. I’m in great company,” says Mrs Patel, pictured with EY Entrepreneur of the Year judging panel chair Diane Foreman.
Ranjna is the winner of the “master” category. The final winner will be revealed in October. The winner of the New Zealand competition goes on to vie for the title of EY World Entrepreneur of the Year in Monaco. For more information, visit the Entrepreneur of the Year website.

Latest health target results pleasing

Through hard work and determination, Total Healthcare PHO met and exceeded the CVD and smoking targets in the last quarter. Targets for immunisations were met in the Counties Manukau district, and were just a few percentage points behind in Auckland and Waitemata.
As for the cervical smear target, it’s a big task for a large, high needs patient populated PHO. With such a significant denominator of eligible high needs women, reaching 80% was always going to be one of Total Healthcare’s toughest aspirations.
Total Healthcare clinics in Counties Manukau DHB show 72% of eligible women were screened in the April to June quarter in 2016. And for Waitemata and Auckland DHBs, 67% were screened. That said, it’s important to look beyond percentages. The increase since last year actually means in total 2,943 more women were screened compared to the same time last year.
What’s more, Waitemata DHB tells us our star smear-taking nurse from Dannemora, Susheela Chandra, is now officially the most prolific primary care smear taker in the Auckland region. Congratulations Susheela!

Working together to improve health outcomes
Total Healthcare contracts Nirvana Health Group as its management support organisation, and Nirvana contracts medical providers to deliver the services required in the PHO/DHB contracts. The providers include East Tamaki Healthcare, West Auckland Healthcare, Mt Roskill Healthcare and White Cross.
