SAN FRANCISCO, CA — August 10, 2016 — Chandran Gallery is pleased to present Sitting Pretty by artist Sam Friedman, in his West Coast debut solo exhibition. The artist -- who splits his time between studios in Brooklyn and Hudson Valley, New York -- continues his exploration of amplified compositions and dichotomies that come together as abstract portals to otherworldly landscapes. The new paintings in Sitting Pretty are solely dedicated to form and come together in an intuitive construction. The show is comprised of 16 new works, many of which will be mural-scale. The exhibition will be on view September 02 - October 14 with an opening reception on Friday, September 2 from 7 - 9pm with the artist in attendance.
 Sam Friedman’s work is a study of line, color and form as a means to balance polarities: fluidity and precision, representational and abstract, ease and spontaneity. While the artist’s visual language was formed through his distinct practice of dismantling and reinterpreting natural landscapes, his newest body takes an intuitive approach, propelled by process. The works materialize as the artist approaches the canvas with only clairvoyance and instinct. In a sense, the paintings are self-generating--an impression of personal inclination. Through this shift and the extreme scale, the paintings give the illusion of movement and a sense of being enveloped by the work’s magnified elements.
About Sam Friedman
Sam Friedman lives and works in Brooklyn and Hudson Valley, New York. He graduated from The Pratt Art Institute and has exhibited nationwide in solo and group exhibitions including Library Street Collective (Detroit) and Joshua Liner Gallery (NYC). His art practice has been heavily informed by his tenure as a studio manager to the artist KAWS, as well as his commercial experience creating artwork for companies and publications such as The New York Times, when he was in his late teens and early twenties. Friedman’s work has been featured in Artsy, Highsnobiety, Sneeze, Juxtapoz, Arkitip, &Press, and others.
