HOLD FAST ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
KAILEY BRYAN & PEPA CHAN (ST. JOHN'S)

Let's look at our next profiled artists. Kailey and Pepa are both multi-media artists currently living and working in St. John’s, NL. Both artists incorporate sculpture, textiles, installations, and video performance into their work. Kailey Bryan's work explores the body with a focus on anxiety, tension, gender, and socially dictated movement, while Pepa Chan's work explores unseen or unrealized human potential. Collectively, their work blends intimacy and absurdity to achieve an emotional hyper-awareness between the artists. They welcome viewers to enter into bizarre yet subtle works to experience and reflect on their own methods of connection.

Kailey has completed a BFA with Honours from York University and was the recipient of the VANL-CARFAC Emerging Artist of the Year Award, the E. J. Lightman Sculpture Award, and the Louis Odette Award for Sculpture. Since studying Graphic Design at University of Buenos Aires, Pepa has been featured in galleries across the world including The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery's permanent collections, and holds private collections in Argentina, Uruguay and the UK.

HOLD FAST is thrilled to welcome both these artists and can't wait for St. John's to experience the depth and beauty of their art.

NADÈGE GREBMEIER FORGET (MONTREAL)

Nadège's art practice provokes a reflexion on the act of looking. Her work is characterized by a preoccupation with the gaze as a tool of re-appropriation and consumption. Her live performances explore and document how digital technologies mediate access to the body.

Actively engaged in Montreal’s visual and live art community as an interdisciplinary artist, project coordinator and curator, Nadège Grebmeier Forget has organized and participated in numerous events, festivals, panels, residencies, and exhibitions in Canada and Germany. Her work has most recently been exhibited at She Works Flexible’s Flex Space (Huston, Texas), Vu Photo (QC), Musée régional de Rimouski, and Musée d'art contemporain des Laurentides. Upcoming events for 2016 include a solo show in La Maison des Arts in Laval and two group shows in Marseille and Paris.

HOLD FAST is looking forward to introducing Nadège during the Festival and we can't wait to see the reflective work that she will bring. We hope you're all getting as excited as we are. HOLD FAST takes place August 18-21.

Foxtrot Oscar One is a new Eastern Edge exterior wall mural by Jonathan Green using the International Code of Signals (ICS). It is a combination of nautical signal flags that communicates the message: “I will keep close to you during the night.” Foxtrot Oscar One speaks poetically through the language of signal flags to EE’s long-running location next to the ships in the harbour, our city’s nautical heritage, and our province’s current economic challenges. St. John's International Women's Film Festival is excited to announce that we will be accepting applications to 2016 RBC Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Award until 5:00pm on Thursday, August 18th.

Established in 2010 in memory of filmmaker and mentor Michelle Jackson, this annual peer-juried award is open to emerging women film directors who reside in Newfoundland and Labrador and have not yet directed a feature film.

The award provides services and cash towards the creation of a six-minute film. The final film will screen at the Closing Night Gala of the 28th annual St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival.

Described by the St. John’s Telegram as a ‘coveted award’, the RBC Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Award has become recognized as an important springboard for the careers of women filmmakers in Newfoundland and Labrador.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: KE’TIPNEMK (HARVEST) FUNDRAISING DINNER AND SILENT AUCTION

On October 22nd, 2016, there will be a silent auction of fine art and craft as a part of the dinner fundraising event in support of The Qalipu Cultural Foundation. The Qalipu Cultural Foundation was formed in 2014 to support Mi’kmaq culture in Newfoundland and Labrador. The foundation exists to ensure cultural documentation, and promote the involvement of youth and elders in cultural activities within the board.

In times of oppression, art has played and even bigger role in allowing societies to maintain some level of identity. Going further, art is a conversation starter, a focus for discussion and often a display of pride that allows us to demonstrate who we were, who we are, and who we plan to become. By supporting aboriginal fine art and crafts you are supporting our voice.

We are inviting artists to submit traditional and contemporary pieces of fine art and crafts that are inspired by aboriginal culture, heritage, or the environment for a silent auction to help raise funds for this event. Artists will have the option of receiving 50% of the final selling price of the work, or donating the entire amount and receiving a charitable tax receipt.
If you are interested in submitting work, please email images of a maximum of five pieces of work along with the title, medium, size, reserve, retail value and brief statement to:

Deadline: 4 pm, September 30th, 2016
