The Joint Youth Commission (JYC) serves youth in the Towns of Ithaca and Caroline and Villages of Cayuga Heights and Lansing as part of the Municipal Youth Services System. Youth development programs are purposefully designed to promote and provide opportunities for youth to gain important life skills that allow youth to have meaningful roles in their communities. The JYC prioritizes pre-employment skills and initial employment experiences for our middle and high school aged youth. Last year, 290 total youth were served, including 30 from the Village of Cayuga Heights.
Last March, the Tompkins County Legislature honored Jonathan Gomes Selman with the Distinguished Youth Award. Jonathan, who resides in the Village, has been a valued commission member for three years and will be off to college this fall. Congratulations Jonathan for your achievements and best of luck!
Interested in advocacy for the young people of Tompkins County? The JYC has a vacancy for one more representative from either the Town of Ithaca or Village of Cayuga Heights. The volunteers who serve on the Commission advise the County Legislature how to spend state and county funds available to support youth services. Members also provides training, technical assistance, monitoring services, planning services, outcomes tracking and other support to youth serving community agencies and school districts. If you know of someone who might be interested in serving or learning more, please contact Kristin M. Bennett, Tompkins County Youth Services Planner, at 607-274-5310 or by visiting www.tompkinscountyny.gov/youth.
