Thefts from Vehicles in Whitley on Thursday 11th August
Residents in Whitley have been posting on their facebook page about thefts of tools & satnavs from vehicles parked on Burnham Road & Rutherglen Avenue.

Accident at Leaf Lane/ Exminster Road Junction
A resident sent this
Dear Cllr Bailey,
As we well know this is a dangerous junction due to the weeds that obscure vision. However, the council did cut back the hedges and strim the weeds a few weeks ago, however weeds being what they are they have started to grow back again.

This morning, I noticed that there has been an accident at this junction, whereby a car travelling along Leaf Lane has had to swerve to miss a car exiting Exminster Road. The damage to the crash barrier and trees is considerable so I assume the car was also travelling in excess of the speed limit. (Sadly I do not know the condition of the driver, but hoping all is well).

We desperately need some sort of speed restricting measure as soon as possible, as cars do hurtle along Leaf Lane, also heavy goods vehicles too. Often there are people who park between the posts, causing their vehicle to be half obstructing the lane which cause immense problems too.

I realise that this may not be top priority, but if people are as risk then it becomes higher.

Here is Roger’s response
Speed and parking between the posts are two main issues on Leaf lane, as is keeping the corners free of growth for good vision. All three are my priority and I am doing all I can to deal with them, but it does take time I am afraid and money, which hopefully might be made available in the future.

Roger is awaiting a reply from the highways inspector with respect to the damaged vertical slabs and the crash barrier.

Walk & Talk at London Road Cemetery

“Have More in Cheylesmore” Update
On 18th July 2015 the event “Have More in Cheylesmore” took place. Local groups gave a 3 minute pitch for money for their project. The money was from the remaining Asda 106 fund which had to be spent to benefit the community, within a mile radius of their Daventry Rd store.

The assembled residents voted on all the bids and those receiving the highest votes were granted the money for their project.

The Black Sun Karate Club at the Cheylesmore Community Centre was one of the successful groups and they purchased safety mats, as used in competitions. The Cheylesmore Community Centre was awarded money to install mirrors in their main room plus the sports hall.

A mother from the Karate club informed us that as a result of the mirrors and mats her son has greatly improved his style and has been selected to represent England in Luxembourg & Belgium later in the year.

Cheylesmore Library - Volunteers Required
There are now 8 residents who have expressed an interest in volunteering at Cheylesmore Library, to help keep it open. Pauline is in the process of organising a meeting with the volunteers.

Under draft proposals, Cheylesmore Library can now only stay open if run by volunteers from May 2017.

Roger and his fellow councillors are working with Cheylesmore Community Centre to try to keep it open.

If you are interested in volunteering to help run the library then please contact the Community Centre or email cheylesmore.ward@gmail.com.

Quad and Scrambler Bikes -  Police Contact
Our local PCSO has informed us that John Steed is the officer specifically assigned to deal with the problem of Quad and Scrambler Bikes in the city.
His contact details are j.steed@west-midlands.pnn.police.uk or call 101 and ask for your information to be passed to John Steed 31065.

Plan for New Landlord Licence for Renting Private Properties
St Michael’s Ward residents could be the first community in the city to benefit from a new scheme that is aiming to improve standards of privately rented accommodation and reduce anti-social behaviour.
Coventry City Council is getting in touch with tenants in Hillfields and adjacent neighbourhoods asking them whether they would favour a selective licensing scheme in their area.

It would mean that properties are more effectively managed. Landlords would be expected to ensure that gas, carbon monoxide, electrical, furnishing and fire safety measures are provided and kept in proper working order. Read more

Coventry City Council Ask Residents to Suggest a Topic for Scrutiny
Do you know of an issue which you think Coventry's scrutiny committees should look into?

There are no hard and fast rules about what makes a good topic for committee to investigate, but there is one thing you should bear in mind; only issues that Coventry residents are concerned about will be considered, particularly if the issue affects the whole city.

If your issue only relates to a small area of the city, it may be better to discuss it with your ward councillors.
If your issue relates to a current concern about a particular service you can tell us online.
If your issue is a complaint about the way a service has been delivered, please use our complaints process.
If you know your issue affects the whole of Coventry and you want your elected representatives to investigate it in a public meeting, please let us know using this form

See Me, Hear Me
Child sexual exploitation (CSE) is a form of sexual abuse and it is against the law. It involves perpetrators grooming their victims in various ways, such as in person, via mobiles or online to gain their trust before emotionally and sexually abusing them for their own gain.

There are many reasons why young people may not tell anyone they are being sexually exploited:
  • they often do not recognise themselves as victims because of the grooming and manipulation they have experienced
  • they are often threatened with violence or physically hurt to maintain their silence
  • they are worried that they won’t be believed, or don’t know how to start to talk about what is happening to them
Child sexual exploitation is a hidden crime that can affect any child, any time regardless of their gender, home life, religion or ethnic background.

Offenders are not just adult males. Women can also commit acts of sexual exploitation, as can other children. It is important that we all know the signs to look out for and how to report concerns, so that together we can prevent CSE. Read more
