Residents Support Public Oversight of Water Supply
|
|
Despite issues in Flint and across the country, residents of northern Wisconsin say they support public oversight of drinking water resources.
In a poll conducted by the Center for Rural Communities at Northland College, about 84 percent of those surveyed said the public sector should be responsible for guaranteeing access to safe drinking water. And roughly 90 percent said that same group should notify people of any changes to water quality or water treatment. The survey was conducted after lawmakers considered, but failed to pass, a bill that would ease the process of privatizing municipal water utilities.
These results were announced just weeks before an annual report by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced that 96 percent of the state's more than 11,000 water systems met all health-based standards in 2015.
