Conferences: We are quickly wrapping up the 1st academic quarter of the year.  October 20th is the last day of the quarter, and report cards will be distributed the following week during parent conferences on Wednesday, October 26th.  Conferences provide a great opportunity to sit down one-on-one with each of your student’s teachers for a brief progress update.  It’s also another opportunity to ask how you can best support your student’s learning in that class.  For specific times and details, click here.

Accreditation: If you haven’t already done so, please take a moment to complete the Parent Accreditation Survey. The purpose of this survey and the accreditation review process overall is to ensure that Eagle River High School's credits, classes, and other programs are recognized by universities, the military, and other post-secondary institutions to which our students will be applying. Your feedback is a key element in helping us gather information that demonstrates Eagle River High School provides students with a top-quality educational experience while also helping us direct our energy to areas where we may need to improve our service model to students and parents.

Daily Announcements: Want to know more about what’s going on at ERHS each day?  Subscribe to our daily announcements and have them sent directly to your email each morning at approximately 10:00am. To sign-up, visit the Daily Announcements page on our website, find the subscription box on the right-hand side, enter your email address, and click subscribe!

Curriculum & Activities

NCAA Information:
Is your student a junior or senior considering athletics at the collegiate level? Any student who has even the slightest interest in collegiate-level athletics should register with the NCAA Eligibility Center – preferably at the beginning of their junior year of high school. This is required of students who have interest in NCAA-governed athletic programs. To get more information about NCAA eligibility, go to www.eligibilitycenter.org.

SPORTS and ACTIVITIES
Thank you to athletes, coaches and parents for a fantastic Fall sports season!  Tennis, football, flag football, and cross country running are wrapping up their seasons with volleyball shortly thereafter.

Sign ups for Winter sports have started.  Please make sure to check the ERHS website for all necessary paperwork, fees and information on sports physicals:
http://eagleriverhigh.asdk12.org/activities/athletics/

A reminder to our freshmen athletes:  Incoming freshmen are deemed eligible during the first quarter, however ALL students are expected to maintain grades at the end of 1st Quarter.  Students who lose grade eligibility will be notified and pulled off of teams.  1st Quarter ends  Oct. 21st.

ZANGLE and GRADES
It’s easy to stay connected with your Zangle Parent Connect and see your student’s progress at ERHS.  It is never too early to be in communication with your child’s teacher and make sure that we all support your child academically.  If you have any questions regarding a specific grade or missing assignments, please contact your child’s teacher.  Teachers’ names are hyperlinked in both the Parent Connect and Student Connect, making it easy to click on the teacher’s name and send an email.

Students also have the ability to go online and access their grades through Zangle Student Connect.  This helps students stay on track and see their individual progress just like Parent Connect.  It is important for students to be accountable for their progress and know where they are standing in each of their classes.  Please encourage your child to use this useful tool to build on their success at school.  With both parents and students having access to this information, great conversations can be held at home.

Please allow time for teachers to grade assignments and tests.  Don’t expect that the grades will be posted on the same day the assignments are due.  If it appears that your child’s information has not been updated within the last two weeks, feel free to contact the teacher.  Keep in mind though, even in the fast-paced world of the Internet, quality grading and feedback still take time.

Parent/Teacher Conferences
Conferences are on Wednesday, October 26th. Students will be released at 11:00.  We strongly encourage you to attend this event to discuss your child’s academic progress with teachers.  Two sessions run from 11:45 am – 2:30 pm and 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm.  Attending early in the session makes it easier to meet all of your children’s teachers.

Seniors!
Remember that Honors Graduate standing is determined by the seventh semester cumulative grade point average.  Seniors must have earned a minimum 3.5 G.P.A. by January 2017 to qualify as an Honors Graduate.

When requesting a letter of recommendation from a counselor or teacher, or when asking a counselor or teacher to fill out a college entrance application form, please allow a minimum of two weeks for staff to complete your request.  Letters of recommendation packets are available from the student’s counselor.

Student and Staff Services

Greetings from the Student Services Office:

We have gotten off to a strong start this year.

As the air outside cools and the end of first quarter quickly approaches, regular attendance, homework completion, and taking a moment to reflect on past successes and improve on weaknesses becomes even more important.  Simply put, reflection on past work gives us all the opportunity to learn from our successes and failures and to perform better in the future.

Einstein considered the lack of reflection to be insanity.  He cleverly captured this universal truth when he remarked, “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Although we might not go so far as claiming the lack of reflection is insanity, we do believe it is essential to being an effective student, and seeking continuous improvement.

A group of teachers and I have been working on designing instruction to give students an opportunity to reflect on their own work, and provide input to their teachers. As part of this process, we have identified some key questions to guide students. Some of the most important questions are as follows:
  • What are the goals of this lesson, and what do I need to do to successfully complete this task?
  • What questions do I have and what resources do I have to answer them?
  • How successful was I on this task, and what can I do differently next time to improve?
These are just three of several questions students can ask to monitor their own progress and to communicate with teachers when they need additional help and resources. I would encourage everyone to look at Edutopia’s The 40 Reflection Questions for further prompts to guide student reflection and future academic success.

Onward!
Luke Almon

DDF
(DRAMA, DEBATE AND FORENSICS)

The ERHS DDF season has begun!  The first tournament held at West HS in September was a big success and saw many new competitors joining the team.  DDF offers 16 different event categories from acting to debate.  There is still plenty of time to sign up and start talking!  If you are interested in joining the team, or just finding out what it’s all about, please attend an after school practice on Thursdays in Ms. Baalerud’s room (A230) from 2:15-4:00pm.

Our next tournament will be co-hosted by ERHS and Chugiak HS, at Chugiak October 21st & 22nd.  We will be in need of judges and support crew for this tournament.  If you are at all interested in public speaking, or simply wish to support ERHS students, please contact head coach Valerie Baalerud at:
baalerud_valere@asdk12.org. No experience is necessary to judge other than a desire to listen and help students improve their speaking skills. We will also be in need of food donations to help support the event.  Thanks for your consideration and good luck to the team this season!
