The Katherine Mansfield Menton Fellowship secured in perpetuity

For the past forty-six years, the Fellowship has enabled a selected New Zealand writer to live for up to six months in Menton, France. There, they have access to the writing room in Villa Isola Bella where one of New Zealand's most famous writers, Katherine Mansfield, once lived. The list of past Katherine Mansfield Fellows reads like a Who's Who of New Zealand literature. Each Fellow has benefited from this life-changing experience, which has resulted in an impressive array of award-winning books.

Under threat from a decline in sponsorship, the Winn Manson Menton Trust had an agreement with the Arts Foundation of New Zealand that if $800,000 could be raised, the Foundation would permanently invest the funds and manage the residency. The fundraising campaign, chaired by Wellington Financial Adviser Keith Ferguson, and managed by the Arts Foundation, reached its target this month! More

Shake off that imposter syndrome and participate in a conference with leading writers and thinkers - the National Writers Forum.

Unlike a writers festival this is an opportunity for writers to interact with experienced and celebrated writers – both local and international. Join in writing exercises, be inspired by New York Times best seller Chris Cleave, become an expert about digital publishing, hear from experts in the literature sector, or just check your manuscript is progressing as it should prior to publication.

Travel: Best plan is to buy a cheap air ticket when you see them promoted.
Dates/times: Registration for NWF will open at 8am and the first session is 9am sharp Sat 17 Sept. The forum will finish by 4:30pm Sun 18 Sept.
Accommodation: Special rate for NWF delegates at the Langham is $185 including WiFi. Click here for instructions on how to book.  The Langham is a 1 km walk from the University of Auckland venue.

PEN Matters

Freedom of Speech in NZ: Complacent Nation

For those interested in free speech in New Zealand and its relationship with political institutions Complacent Nation by Gavin Ellis is a must read.

Ellis is senior lecturer in Media, Film and Television at the University of Auckland. A BWB Text, Complacent Nation sets out the ‘big picture’, drawing the reader along the path that leads to the ultimate conclusion, there are many ways freedom of speech can be eroded in society, and New Zealand has become complacent about the continuing erosion of the ‘right to know’ what the government is doing. As former editor-in-chief of the New Zealand Herald, Ellis' chapter on the decline of the news media in New Zealand should be compulsory reading.

On Xie Hong, Master of Chinese Unreality

Extract from an article in the Literary Hub about NZSA member Xie Hong by Hal Swindall
Xie Hong was born in a small northern Guangdong Province town called Chongyang. Of Hakka ancestry, he was the son of an accountant and a housewife, and has two siblings. His childhood home was just a brick and earth bungalow, which was too small for the five of them. More

‘Credit the Artist’: Rising Star Sarah McIntyre

Illustrator, author, and campaigner Sarah McIntyre (@jabberworks) has proved a powerful voice for illustrators over the past 18 months. Struck by the frequency with which illustration in books was downgraded or ignored–uncredited on covers, left off sales charts, invisible amid prize nominations, and forgotten by reviewers–she launched a crusade to see illustrators properly recognized and rewarded. Book publishers do not do SEO like the big guys do although they could

Partner Pete McCarthy pointed me to an article a couple of weeks ago that also introduced me to a website called Viperchill and its gifted, self-promoting Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)/Marketing creator, Glen Allsopp. The linked post, which I strongly urge you to read, enumerates quite painstakingly the techniques used by 16 online media companies with a large portfolio of brands that enable them to dominate specific search results in Google across a very wide range of topics and categories.
