The Katherine Mansfield Menton Fellowship secured in perpetuity
For the past forty-six years, the Fellowship has enabled a selected New Zealand writer to live for up to six months in Menton, France. There, they have access to the writing room in Villa Isola Bella where one of New Zealand's most famous writers, Katherine Mansfield, once lived. The list of past Katherine Mansfield Fellows reads like a Who's Who of New Zealand literature. Each Fellow has benefited from this life-changing experience, which has resulted in an impressive array of award-winning books.
Under threat from a decline in sponsorship, the Winn Manson Menton Trust had an agreement with the Arts Foundation of New Zealand that if $800,000 could be raised, the Foundation would permanently invest the funds and manage the residency. The fundraising campaign, chaired by Wellington Financial Adviser Keith Ferguson, and managed by the Arts Foundation, reached its target this month! More

Jude Watson wins NWF early bird ticket draw
Congratulations to Jude Watson, the Top of the South member who purchased an early bird ticket to the NWF. The cost of the ticket will be reimbursed thanks to a member who donated the ticket and prefers to remain anonymous.
Jude Watson is a freelance editor, who has only moved to Nelson this year after spending many years in Wellington. She is married with two children (13 and 12). She loves editing, receiving work from various publishing houses, manuscripts from writers and is also the editor for WOW this year. She is really looking forward to NWF and cannot believe how lucky she is to have had her name picked. Many thanks to the donor for such a prize.

University of Waikato / Creative New Zealand
Writer in Residence 2017
The University of Waikato invites applications for the position of Writer in Residence, tenable for twelve months from January. The salary on offer is $52,000 jointly funded by the University of Waikato and Creative New Zealand, the Arts Council of New Zealand Toi Aotearoa. The position is open to poets, novelists, short story writers, dramatists, and writers of serious non-fiction. The appointment will be made on the basis of a proven record of publications of high quality.
The Writer is required to live in Hamilton during the tenure of the award. There are no teaching or lecturing duties attached to the award, the sole purpose is to give the Writer the freedom to write. It is expected the Writer will participate in the cultural life of the University. The Writer will be able to make use of the Michael King Writers’ Retreat in Opoutere for a period of up to two weeks (market value $3,000).

Write Well Award 2016 - recipients announced
Congratulations to Siobhan Harvey, whose piece of long fiction, Black Origami Birds, first published in Griffith Review 49: New Asia Now and Asian Literary Review 29, has been announced as one of the recipients of the 2016 Write Well Award 2016.
The story, about a wife grieving the loss of her Japanese husband in the 2011 Christchurch Earthquakes was nominated for the award by Griffith Review. Read more about the winners here.

Our next 30 Week Fiction / Memoir Course begins on 27th Sept 2016. Society of Authors members receive a 10% discount. The course is in its sixth year, and features many of NZ’s leading writers and editors as workshop leaders and mentors, including Tessa Duder, Geoff Walker, Roger Hall, Owen Marshall, Elisabeth Smither and Judith White. Students receive one-on-one mentoring over the summer with an established Kiwi writer. Graduates regularly report that the most valuable aspect of the course is the close support of a group of like-minded start out writers. Many graduate groups go on meeting for years after the end of the course, so you get several years support for the price of one! Twenty graduates of our 30 week fiction / memoir courses have gone on to publish novels or win prizes in national writing awards in the last three years.

Anna Bowbyes Joins Massey University Press
Anna Bowbyes is the new managing editor of Massey University Press. She succeeds Kimberley Davis, who has left to take up a position at Allen & Unwin. Anna comes to MUP from Penguin Random House; previously she worked at Random House New Zealand and before then Harper Collins New Zealand. Anna will be based at the MUP office at Massey’s Albany campus.

Retired engineer and yoga practitioner winners of 2016 Mind Body Spirit Literary Awards
The Ashton Wylie Charitable Trust announced the winners of their Mind Body Spirit Literary Awards last Friday evening, at Hopetoun Alpha in Auckland.
Winning the Book Category prize of $10,000 is retired, Nelson-based communications engineer Alastair Bruce Scott-Hill with The Paranormal is Normal (Xcell Books). Scott-Hill’s book which uses “solid science” to claim the existence of reincarnation, the paranormal and immortality. He said that his 15-year journey to write the book had changed his beliefs.
Astrologer and yoga teacher Linda George from Wellington wins the Unpublished Manuscript Category with Living in the Big Picture. George’s manuscript looks to the hidden teachings of the ancient world to help us thrive in a chaotic modern world. She also won $10,000 in prize money and hopes that her win will lead to the publication of her manuscript.
The late Auckland businessman Ashton Wylie was a philanthropist with a wide range of interests, particularly in the area of personal development and positive relationships. The Ashton Wylie Charitable Trust was set up at Ashton's request and was named after him.

NZ Book Festival
Put 5 November in your calendar for the 2016 NZ Book Festival, Mt Eden War Memorial Hall, 487 Dominion Road, opposite Potters Park.
The registration $20 early-bird discount closes 31 August; however we’re extending this until 9 September for NZ Society of Authors members.
Stands will be divided into genres making it easier for readers to find their favourites. Prices range from $50 to $125, with up to three authors able to share a stand at no extra charge. This is great for keeping costs down while still promoting yourself and your books. The event will be advertised on the Festival and author websites, FaceBook, community noticeboards, editorials in Ponsonby News and Verve Magazine, gorilla style advertising, community announcements on radio and council websites and cheeky postcards.
As well as authors, there’s a separate area for literary businesses giving writers the opportunity to ask questions. To support a local school’s fundraising; we’ve donated the venue’s kitchen for them to sell homemade goodies.

National Schools Poetry Award announced
New Zealand’s poets of the future celebrated in National Schools Poetry Award
A North Shore student is the 2016 winner of the International Institute of Modern Letters’ National Schools Poetry Award, which coincides with National Poetry Day.
Ioana Yule Manoa, a year 12 student of Northcote College in Auckland, won first place with her poem ‘History’. Judged by 2016 Creative NZ/Victoria University of Wellington Writer in Residence Anne Kennedy, the award has a prize of $500 and the opportunity to attend a poetry masterclass with Ms Kennedy and fellow poet James Brown at the IIML, home of Victoria University’s prestigious creative writing programme. Ioana’s school library receives a $500 book grant. The nine other gifted young poets who were shortlisted in the awards will also attend the masterclass.

2017 Ockham New Zealand Book Awards judges announced
The 2017 Ockham New Zealand Book Awards will be judged by 12 eminent academics, writers, journalists, librarians, curators, commentators and booksellers from around New Zealand.
For the first time, an international judge has also been invited to take a seat at the fiction ‘table,’ assisting the local judges of the Acorn Foundation Literary Award and taking the total number of judges to 13. The name of the international judge will be revealed early next year.
There are four Awards categories: The Acorn Foundation Literary Award (for Fiction), Poetry, General Non-Fiction and Illustrated Non-Fiction. The judges will also award a Best First Book Award in each category. A Māori language adviser will judge the Māori Language Award.
The judges will announce their longlist on November 22, 2016, and their shortlist on March 07 2017. More

Shake off the imposter syndrome

Freedom of Speech in NZ: Complacent Nation
For those interested in free speech in New Zealand and its relationship with political institutions Complacent Nation by Gavin Ellis is a must read.
Ellis is senior lecturer in Media, Film and Television at the University of Auckland. A BWB Text, Complacent Nation sets out the ‘big picture’, drawing the reader along the path that leads to the ultimate conclusion, there are many ways freedom of speech can be eroded in society, and New Zealand has become complacent about the continuing erosion of the ‘right to know’ what the government is doing. As former editor-in-chief of the New Zealand Herald, Ellis' chapter on the decline of the news media in New Zealand should be compulsory reading.
