TSF Turns Five
It's hard to believe that The Speedy Foundation has been advocating for suicide prevention and mental health education for 5 years. Much has changed since 2011, and that calls for celebration!

We have a new website, part-time executive director, and tons of activities coming up this fall, including a press conference with Mayor Bieter of Boise (see 2011 press conference) to update just how much has changed in 5 years.
We hope to see you there!

What is the Paper Tigers Documentary?

Paper Tigers follows a year in the life of an alternative high school that has radically changed its approach to disciplining its students and in the process has become a promising model for how to break the cycles of poverty, violence and disease that affect families.

Jim Sporleder, principal at Lincoln Alternative High School in Walla Walla, Washington, a school riddled with violence, drugs and truancy, discovered that stressed brains can’t learn.

Following six students over the course of a school year, Principal Sporleder and his staff tried a new approach to discipline. It was based on understanding and treatment rather than judgement and suspension.

Three years later, the number of fights at Lincoln Alternative High School were reduced by 75% and the graduation rate was dramatically increased. Paper Tigers is the story of how one school was able to make a dramatic change and how just one caring adult can help break the cycle of adversity in a young person’s life.

Screening Information:

Parents, teachers, providers and community members are invited to learn about the positive approaches of dealing with child and adolescent trauma and the effects that positive engagements have over punitive punishment. Immediately following the video there will be a panel discussion. Admission is free and refreshments will be served. Screenings are provided by Optum Idaho, Idaho Federation for Families, Idaho Children's Trust Fund
and The Speedy Foundation

Mental Heath First Aid

Recently, TSF sponsored Betsy Moynihan and Molly Collins to become MHFA trainers and Shannon Decker to become a Youth MHFA trainer. This has allowed us to be able to provide even more training opportunities in Idaho and Utah.

The Speedy Foundation has been a supporter of Mental Health First Aid since sending three of our Board members to become trainers in 2013. Since then, through a partnership with Optum Idaho and Optum Salt Lake County, we have provided 18 trainings, totaling 313 trained first-aiders.

Betsy and Molly will be working with groups like College of Western Idaho, College of Southern Idaho and others to bring MHFA trainings to the area. Shannon is working with local schools and youth groups to make YMHFA training available. If you'd like to bring a training to your group, or participate in a scheduled training, please sign up on our website.

Shannon Decker has been appointed executive director of the Speedy Foundation.

Decker, a co-founder of the foundation, received a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Idaho and has ten years of private and public teaching and administrative experience in Idaho, Nevada and California. She is a mental health first aid facilitator who offers trainings in Idaho and Utah to further the foundation’s mission of promoting mental health education and advocating for suicide prevention.

Peterson was an American World Cup aerial skier and three-time Olympian who was based at Bogus Basin and won the silver medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. He died at age 29 in 2011.

The nonprofit Speedy Foundation was founded in 2011 by Peterson’s friends and family to prevent suicide, promote conversations to end stigma, and support mental health education. The Speedy Foundation raises funds for, and collaborates with, other advocacy groups.

If you are interested in participating in NAMI Walks Utah, please consider supporting Robyn Emmery's team. The walk is on Saturday, September 10, 2016, for a 5k walk at Liberty Park, Salt Lake City. Robyn is one of our partners at Optum Salt Lake County and would love some TSF support.
