Help needed to get our grounds ready for the fall!
Our Sacred Grounds have made it through a challenging summer in flying colors. Thanks to all who've made this vivid display possible. Please feel free to cut some of the zinnias and cosmos in our raised beds to take home and brighten your home, or the home of someone else! Flowers keep on blooming if they are cut and appreciated, so don't be shy in adopting them!
As the weather cools, we have lots of tasks to complete in preparation for winter. Dead branches need pruning, weeds need pulling, the remaining mulch needs to be spread. Please consider helping to care for the grounds at St. Anne's by attending one or both (!) of the two scheduled work afternoons: September 25th and October 16th. They will commence after the 11:00 service and last for a few hours. Your help is greatly needed and valued. Please RSVP to Geri Drymalski at geri.drymalski@gmail.com if you can assist with our stewardship efforts. Thank you!

St. Anne’s Women’s Retreat Day
Saturday, September 24, 2016, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
Led by Mother Vikki
With regard to spirituality, we each have a tendency to be drawn to certain sights, thoughts, sounds, and contexts that make us sensitive to the presence of the sacred.
Why does one style of worship, type of preaching, or type of music nourish us while another style leaves us feeling, “Meh, I can take it or leave it.”?
Our one-day retreat invites us to experience and reflect upon why we feel as we do about what feeds our soul and how we can strengthen our connection to God. Structured on the concepts presented in Rev. Dr. Corinne Ware’s book Discover Your Spiritual Type, we will explore together four types of spiritual expression that help us connect with the Holy. In the process we will also identify spiritual styles that we can integrate into our preferred style in order to expand our experience of the Holy.

Ode to the Olympics Vestry Blurb
- The day after the swimming events ended: Party time is back! Chris Mathews, head of Newcomers Ministry will soon be announcing the dates and locations for upcoming Newcomer dinners. This is a chance for newcomers to St. Anne's to get to know us and for us to get to know them to make them feel welcomed. Stay tuned...
- Like Dutch cyclist Anemiek Van Vleuten who crashed and is back on her bike:The popular "Transforming Questions" class will be back for the Fall. It will be held after the 10am service on Sundays.
- Like looking forward to Tokyo in 2020: Adult Forum will also be kicked off in the Fall. This is intended for the St. Anne's community and also for the larger Damascus/Clarksburg/Upper Montgomery County community. Slated to be held once a month, it will feature speakers presenting various topics sure to be of interest to attendees.
- Like Jack Conger, Olympic swimmer awaiting his shot: Fr. Lee continues to recover from his car accident. Although he is feeling much better, he still has not been cleared from physical therapy.
- Like competing against Katie Ledecky: We are behind in both plate and pledge income for July by $10,000. Our treasurer expects this to be made up for in the Fall or by year's end.
- We don't want the Chesapeake to mirror the waters at Olympic Venues: The "Baysaver" procedure to be performed in and around the area of Lake Carpenter will take place in the upcoming months. It will cost $1300 and is required by the state to be compliant with the EPA.
- Shelter for the 41 year old Oksana Chusovitina, Olympic gymnast from Uzebekistan, 43 year old Kristin Armstrong, gold medal cyclist,52 year old Phillip Dutton, Olympic equestrian-all considered "seniors" at the games: Our affordable senior housing project, Mission First, should be supplying us with a mock up of what the building will look like sometime in September. We will have a town hall type meeting to present to the congregation. Right now, the best case scenario for groundbreaking will be in six months with the worst case at eleven months.
- As new and innovative as "cupping" is to Michael Phelps: Mitchell Sams, Diocesan Communications Director, will be helping St. Anne's increase and enhance its social media presence in the upcoming months.
- Like required elements on the balance beam: The financial committee and members of the vestry will be meeting with Bishop Mariann on Nov. 16th to discuss financial matters.
- As important as feedback is to platform divers: We will be conducting our annual Mutual Ministry Review in the Fall. This is for Fr. Lee to note what the vestry is doing well and what needs room for improvement. Conversely, this is for the vestry to note what Fr. Lee is doing well and what needs room for improvement.
- Not every 4 years: The annual meeting will be held on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2017. Make a note of it!
- Like requesting a new shuttlecock in badminton: Tim Pacey will be collecting budget requests beginning in September.

Godly Play at St. Anne's
Begins Sept. 11
Godly Play is an innovative Montessori-based curriculum that engages children in learning through storytelling, ritual, and hands-on activity. Godly Play is based upon the recognition that children have an innate sense of the presence of God. All they lack is the appropriate language to help them identify and express it so it can be explored and strengthened. The Godly Play approach teaches classical Christian language in a way that enhances the child’s authentic experience of God so it can contribute to the creative life of the child and the world.
We invite you to bring your children ages 3 yrs. through 5th grade to Godly Play classes while you attend the 10 AM worship service. You should bring your children downstairs to the classrooms for Godly Play by 9:55am. Your children are welcomed downstairs for Godly Play by our door person. The children gather outside the classroom and as they are ready, they are invited, one-at-a-time, to go inside and build their community. They will experience the telling of a story and then have some time to respond freely through wondering or art materials or by using the story materials themselves. After that, they’ll once again come together as a group to share a feast. The Godly Play teachers will lead the children upstairs to worship during the Passing of the Peace so that they can join their parents for Holy Communion.

Our Youth Opportunities are Expanding!
As part of the new diocesan regional structure we will be working in collaboration with other churches in the Northern Montgomery County area. Recently youth workers from the churches in the region got together....
SO....
What happens when a bunch of youth leaders get together?
We decide we want our youth to get together as well!
To do this we have come up with a theme of “Sacred in the Secular” – Where does our faith come into play in the current world? We will be gathering once a month, on the 3rd Sunday, from 4-5:30PM. We will be joining forces with other Episcopal churches in the area to provide some fun large group activities for all youth in middle & high school. Our goal is to mix some games, food and provoking conversations into a fun time for all. We can carpool from St. Anne's to the other churches. Who knows - you may even know some of these youth from other churches and not even know it.
Our schedule will be -
- Sept. 18th - St. Nick’s - New School Year, theme: repentance, returning and starting again
- Oct. 16th - St. John’s - Halloween - theme: all souls, all saints; service in a graveyard????
- Nov. 20th - Ascension - we are hoping this can be a time of theological reflection for some work at the soup kitchen which is in Gaithersburg which we hope to go to quarterly...
- Dec. 18th - St. Peter’s -consumerism and commercialism
- Jan 15th - St. Anne's - Epiphany - How does Christ's manifestation to the world occur in us as we look at Martin Luther King and our new president...
Faithfully, Bettianne

CREATING DEMENTIA-FRIENDLY CHURCHES
Saturday, September 17, 2016, 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Cost: $20.00
Dementia has been called the “theological disease” because it affects our language, long-term memory and ability to plan the future—aspects of life that we ascribe to what makes us human. Yet God does not abandon us during any illness, nor do we stop growing spiritually.
Creating Dementia-Friendly Churches is for caregivers, church members, clergy, neighbors, and anyone interested in this disease and how we respond to it. We will explore the science as well as the spiritual aspects, and create strategies for improving ways that we cope with dementia, particularly in our church communities.
