Whitley Common South
Hazel Hill, a local resident & campaigner to have Whitley Common South designated a Public Rights of Way, has posted this on Streetlife;
My application to have the footpaths on Leaf lane Open Space recorded is now with the Rights of Way Officer. In the meantime however, I am very pleased to announce that management at Coventry Council have voluntarily accepted that the perimeter walk will be an official footpath and signs will be erected to that effect.

Indeed the grass around that part has been cut this week so should make walking much easier and drier! The grass on this footpath will be cut several times during the summer months.

Talks are ongoing with regards to opening up the fence which at present closes off the "top meadow". A decision on the remaining footpaths may take some time but I am quite hopeful as a great deal of user evidence has been lodged. My thanks to those of you who have offered support.

Alert for Ashington Grove & Rutherglen Avenue
On dealing with a resident’s query, Roger was informed that Balfour Beatty will shortly be working in the area replacing old gas pipes. The work will commence in Ashington Grove and should take about four weeks. Roger learnt that the start point is below the school site and then moving on down the hill. Once finished here the work will move on to Rutherglen Avenue for another two weeks.

Most of the work will require the digging up of pavements, not the road. One exception, we understand, will be the entrance to Hillfray Drive where the old pipes are under the road.

Clearly with schools going back soon, there will be a certain amount of serious disruption which it seems is unavoidable.

We will continue to keep you posted on progress in this area as and when we are told. We also understand that letters will be hand delivered to houses affected by the disruption.

Cheylesmore Library - Volunteers Required
Another resident has contacted us, which means that 12 residents (2 of which are men) have expressed an interest in volunteering at Cheylesmore Library, to help keep it open.  Pauline has organised the first volunteers’ meeting for Thursday 1st September.

Under draft proposals, Cheylesmore Library can now only stay open if run by volunteers from May 2017.
If you are interested in volunteering to help run the library then please contact the Community Centre or cheylesmore.ward@gmail.com.

Fairies move into Baginton Fields

During a recent visit to Baginton Fields, Roger & Pauline visited the Fairies’ houses. Children are leaving messages in the special jars at the site & the fairies are responding to them.
See more on their “Friends of Baginton Fields” facebook group.

Warning – People Touting for Business in the Area
A concerned resident has just sent us this:
Dear Roger
Just to let you know we have had two separate incidents of men touting for business. One yesterday wanting to charge £20 to put tiles back on our roof and the other a few minutes ago (Saturday at 6.30pm) wanting to clear gutters. This time there were three of them. I asked for their business card and if they were insured, they quickly disappeared.
This is despite having a notice asking such people not to knock.

Christ Church Benefit from Asda 106 money

The new entrance to Christ Church is in the process of being built, thanks to the Asda section 106 money that they received last year. The construction will be wheel chair friendly and should be completed in about 6 weeks.

Demolition of old Alice Stevens School
Initially we’d been informed that the old Alice Stevens School was to be demolition in August. However at one of the environmental assessments a bat was spotted. This means that more surveys need to be carried out and the building can only be demolished once the bat or bats have been moved. The most appropriate time to do this is October. Therefore it is likely to be October before demolition occurs.

It’s unknown if Balfour Beatty will have completed their work in Ashington Grove & Rutherglen Avenue before the demolition starts.

Fenside Stream Update
Roger contacted Whitefriars again for an update on the tidy-up work required at the Fenside stream.
This is the response from Scott Fincham of Whitefriars
Hi Councillor Bailey,
I have walked the site with our on-house supervisors and can confirm that we will be strimming the bank lines in due course. A couple of things to add on that are that :
a) there is wildlife present and we need to do the cutting ideally once the weather turns a little colder
b) We still have a water ingress issue on the section towards the A45, but we will do as much as we can whilst we continue to investigate the water issue.

For info we also need to carry out some minor tree works on the ash and the willow tree opposite 130, but the hawthorn will remain in situ as it adds to the natural habitat, even though it is 75% dead.

H Bars at a Dropped Kerb
A resident, who lives opposite a school, contacted Roger with a request for a H Bar outside their house, due to the constant problems with school traffic.
This is the information that he received from Sara-Louise Allman, Traffic & Network Management:
We can only install H Bars where a resident of the property is registered disabled and has a blue badge, due to the limited budget we have for these markings.

Unfortunately we can’t consider an exemption from the rules for this reason.  This is a regular occurrence near almost all schools. The marking itself is only advisory as it is a contravention, even without the marking, to park across a dropped kerb crossing point.

Our Parking Enforcement Officers can issue Penalty Charge Notices to vehicles who block the dropped kerb. They can be contacted on 02476 834367.
