Tickets are now on sale for AvonFest 2016 … this is our annual fundraiser for Avondale Samaritan Place. Come out to Cahaba Brewery on Sunday, September 11 from 5:30-7:30pm for some fellowship with friends, good brews and food, a silent auction, and most importantly, to celebrate and support the shared ministry between Avondale and Canterbury UMCs that is Avondale Samaritan Place. You can purchase tickets for $50 online (canterburyumc.org/avonfest) or at the door. If you have any items you’d like to donate to the silent auction, please contact one of our ASP Board members (Alison Jenkins, Jill Wheeler, Ginger Branson, or Malinda Weaver).
Tutor a Child in Reading
Our church is proud to be a STAIR site for Birmingham school children. STAIR is an after school reading program that helps 2nd grade children become stronger readers. We need volunteers throughout the school year. Each volunteer is assigned a child so they can read together, play word games, practice phonics and write stories. The relationship that is formed not only helps them in reading, but it gives them a safe space to grow and develop. A volunteer commits to:
-
Attend one 2-hour training class.
-
Observe with another tutor one afternoon before being paired with a student.
-
Tutor a student one afternoon a week, committing to a 2-hour timeframe (we follow the Birmingham City School calendar).
-
Pass a background check.
Contact Alison Jenkins for more information (ajenkins@avonumc.net) or visit STAIR’s website (StairBirmingham.org).
