Message from the Principal

Book Week Parade
What a wonderful morning it was this morning!  Thank you to all the parents and staff for making such a huge effort.  This morning at the parade I mentioned the Coolbinia Reading Challenge.  I can not stress enough the importance of reading at home and this challenge supports your child and many other Australian children with the funds raised going to the Indiginous Literacy Foundation.

“Specifically parental involvement with reading activities at home has significant positive influences not only on reading achievement, language comprehension and expressive language skills (Gest, Freeman, Domitrovich, and Welsh, 2004), but also on pupils’ interest in reading, attitudes towards reading and attentiveness in the classroom (Rowe, 1991).”     A research review: the importance of families and the home environment, Angelica Bonci) (2008, revised 2010 and March 2011

Sharing Our Stories

Our Students are making us proud

Our children will be sharing their environmental learning journeys with the wider community.

For example, Roots & Shoots members created a painting of our bushland to be installed on a Peace Pole at Perth Zoo, while our senior students are preparing to present Butterfly Workshops at the forthcoming Kids Teaching Kids Conference and United Nations Millennium Kids Conference.

These opportunities empower our children to confidently contribute beyond our school gates.

Bullying is Not On

How we deal with bullying at Coolbinia

In schools it is important to teach children the skills of positive behaviour. Children don’t always get it right intuitively.  Maintaining positive behaviour is everyone’s responsibility.  Everybody is accountable; the school, parents, teachers and friends to deal with these problems.  Bullying and unkind behaviour should be brought out into the open so we have the opportunity to help our children grow to be positive citizens.
Some of the ways we deal with bullying at our school includes group discussions, role play, class lessons, and individual conversations.  We aim to empower our children to make good choices, support kind behaviour and deter unkind behaviour.

Coolbinia Primary School has a Bullying Prevention and Management Brochure available for parents to refer to.    Further information is available online.

Tree Planting in Abundance

By Our Great Coolbinia Gardeners

Our fabulous students have literally planted hundreds of trees.

All our classes, from Kindy to Year 6, have participated in our annual tree planting program in the school's bushland.

Over 500 trees and shrubs have been planted to help conserve endemic species, as well as assist control of erosion and weeds. Well done to all our gardeners!

Children worked with their buddy classes and learnt about the importance of trees and how to plant seedlings to maximise their survival rate.

Many thanks to all teachers for participating in the program and to Dr Lewis for organising the planting schedule.

Good Luck to Our Chess Players

Interschool Chess Tournament next week

We are sending 6 teams to compete on Monday 29 August at John 23rd College. They will face some stiff competition - fingers crossed for you chess players!

Wirelss Wonders of Robots

Coolbinia's Expertise on Show

Ten impressive students presented a one hour robotics workshop at a Community Science Expo on Sunday 21 August.
This event was part of National Science Week and was held at the Canning River Eco Education Centre.  The students, from across the primary years, shared their knowledge about different robots used at our school and then invited other children to experiment the robots.

Thanks to Mrs Creasy and Dr Lewis for organising this workshop so that our children could share their expertise and enhance their presentation skills.

Well done!

Congratulations

Academic Success

Well done to two of our graduating year six students who have earned places in specialist programs next year. Javier de Sousa will take up a place in the Languages Program at Mount Lawley Senior High School and Drew Dembo has accepted a spot at Perth Modern School in 2017.
