It's been a nice summer break and we hope you all had a restful and creative time filled with good food, family and of course a little travel, perhaps even to far away lands. In keeping with that theme, for our next meeting we have invited Oriental Ink Artist, Seung-Yeon Oh to show us her take on this historically rich way of laying pigment to paper.

Seung-Yeon Oh, born in Pusan, South Korea, is an Oriental Ink Art painter known for her expressive landscape renderings.
With a major in Oriental Art Painting, Ms. Oh graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art and a Master of Fine Arts, as well as receiving a teaching credential from Sejong University in Seoul, South Korea. In 1991, she furthered her expertise in Beijing at the Chinese Art Research Center. Since 2005, when she moved to the U.S with her family, she has been teaching Oriental Ink Art and Korean Folk Art in various public and private educational settings as well as in her private studio. From 2011 to 2012, she was a curator at Gallery Verdugo in Glendale.
Until that time, there had been few exhibitions about Oriental Ink Art in the area, and many people had a thirst to see what for them was an unfamiliar art form. This led her to introduce the especially beautiful Oriental line art by teaching courses at a number of colleges, such as Glendale Community College (C.E.S), Pasadena City College Extension, and Horizon Institute in Los Angeles. Ms. Oh has had an award-winning career in art, having won contests in South Korea and given solo and group exhibitions in Korea and the United States.
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to learn about the materials, history and tools of Seung-Yeon Oh’s Oriental Ink Art at our next monthly meeting, where she will be focusing on images of bamboo, orchids and a variety of fish.

Greetings to all our new and long time members,
I hope everyone has had a restful and fun summer, painting, traveling, taking photos, and relaxing. We would like to thank Jacqueline Myers-Cho for her enthralling presentation at the June meeting of her enchanting art work and how she creates it. She is an informative teacher and artist who enjoys sharing her inventive process of creation.
Since many of our members expressed interest in drawing or painting a costumed model, I have arranged to have our first modeling session on September 20, 2016 from 9am to 12 noon at BMAI. The second session will be on September 29th from 6pm till 9pm. Also at BMAI, 2228 Florencita, Montrose, just a couple blocks from our meeting room. The cost will be $15 for members per session and $20 for non-members. Funds will be used to pay for the model and the location rental. We aren't sure what style of wardrobe the model will be wearing at this point, but, you can be sure it will inspire creativity.
The board is currently investigating several venues for our Fall show as well as future events. Anyone who would like to help with this endeavor, share ideas, suggestions of venues or names of people to call, please contact me by email at dianem.carter@yahoo.com. Shows take a great deal of work, as you know. We can't pull them off with out the assistance of lots of people, so please consider volunteering with the exhibition committee.
In addition to our diligent search for exhibition venues, we are also proud to announce the re-design of the GAA website, which Vicky Rees has been working on over the summer. There are still a few tweeks in the works, but, if you haven't popped over to see it, take a moment and check it out. Menus are more concise and we hope that information will be easier to locate.
Over the next few months, we also hope to add the option of paying for your membership and exhibition fees on-line, through the website with a credit card and/or a paypal acct. We will let you know as soon as that takes place.
We are happy to announce that our new GAA ID cards are printed and will be available to all paid members who wish to obtain one at the next meeting, on Sept. 8th.
Kudos to our energetic members and their accomplishments, as they are wonderful encouragement for everyone.
See you at our next meeting on September 8th at the Citibank meeting room where we will kick off our new season of creativity, with Ms. Oh's intriguing Oriental painting demonstration. Bring some snacks, art and summer adventure stories to share with your GAA pals. I hope to see you there.

Survey Results Are In ✅
Thank you to those who took the time to answer our brief ten question survey which we invited current and recent GAA members to take in June via Survey Monkey. Truly, there were no great surprises, and seeing the feedback, helped us to adjust our course a bit in a few simple ways. Briefly, I would like to talk about some of the more obvious things we gleaned from the responses that were given.
Overall, the main reasons why people are members of the association is to continue learning about art and the exhibition opportunities with our collective of artists. No surprises there. Generally, people are pleased with the frequency of exhibitions, however, the venues were not getting high marks. We all know that finding adequate and affordable exhibition space has been a challenge for several years in Glendale and the surrounding areas. We will continue the charge of finding new and satisfactory locations to have exhibitions in the months to come. One of the locations we are currently looking into is the McGroarty Arts Center in Tujunga as well as the Burbank Center for the Arts, two promising venues. All members are asked to put your feelers out and help in the search.
It seems we are right on track with the demonstrations being offered, highlighting primarily oil and watercolor painters, with the exception of pure and simple drawing, the foundation of visual art, so I'll be seeking an exceptional drawing demonstrator in the coming months. There were also several individuals who expressed an interest in plein aire painting AND how to sell and promote their art as an independent artist. Unfortunately, we don't have a lead for the plein aire paint outs, so until someone steps into that position, we are temporarily pausing paint outs. I do however know several very gifted plein aire painters who might agree to share their tricks and techniques with the meeting attendees. As part of my VP duties, I am seeking 2017 demonstrators and moving forward, will keep the feedback in mind from the survey. In answer to the feedback we received about the website, half of respondants felt that GAA should offer a member’s image gallery listing free as part of their membership, so, with that said, in the new year, included in your membership fees, we will be providing a free gallery listing for members upon request. All you will have to do is email four well photographed images of your work (without the frame or matte showing) in jpg or png format along with your name, contact information and website address if you have one.
Another survey request we received was that individuals would like to see more Calls for Artists on our site and in the newsletter from other organizations. Unfortunately, we do not have the person power to stay up to date with the many calls that continually arise. What we have done is included a page of “LINKS” for you under the “Resource” section of the website to find calls, both locally and nationally, as well as other art organizations and sites. There is a lot of good stuff there, so check it out…. and once again, if you know of a good one that isn’t included, please let me know and I will be happy to add it. Volunteers Needed
Araks Johannes has been handling the membership duties for a long time and will need to step down soon. We are seeking someone to fill her position as Membership Chair. The position requires a one year commitment of 3-5 hours per month. Knowledge of Excel or Numbers software programs is necessary and monthly board meeting attendance is helpful.
Many of our members enjoy “Paint Outs”, however, we currently do not have a coordinator for these events, so they have not been taking place. If you enjoy Paint Outs and would like to see these reinstated, get involved and take the lead as Paint Out Coordinator.

 Vivianne Bowman went on a short 3-day mini vacation to Oceanside and Carlsbad. “On a-spur-of-the-moment, I stopped at the San Juan Capistrano Mission and sketched at the beautiful old grounds. Loved going to the beach! Also drove all the way up to the Palomar Observatory. I sketched and painted the 200 ft. Hale Telescope; along with oaks in a picnic area. Took lots of photos, and it was a very productive Plein Air trip!”

 Diane Carter recently sold her “Daffodil” watercolor to a collector in Florida.

Dulcie Adams won first place in the July Mini Show of the Torrence Artists' Guild with her oil on canvas painting, "Mountain Vista."

 Becky Mate’s painting "Tujunga Ice Cream Cairn”, which won a second place ribbon in a Glendale Art Association show, was also on display in August in a group exhibit of the River Rock Arts Colony (a Sunland-Tujunga group) at Back Door Bakery and it sold.
Becky also sold her painting of Tujunga’s Roe-Zee Market (pictured below) to a local Tujunga business owner who “instantly wanted it” when he saw it.
The 19th celebration of International Art Day (2nd Friday in August) at Becky’s home in Sunland was a success. There was a Kid’s Art Table, an adult art & sculpture show, a poetry reading with awards and even a play.

Jennifer Bentson-Gebel’s Oak Tree Tea event at Dabney Hall, California Institute of Technology in Pasadena from June was a big success. Among the attendees were Diane Carter, Helena Bowman and Vivienne Bowman.
