Mt. Pisgah Update
August 24, 2016
Come join us Friday, August 26, at 8 pm as we watch “Kung Fu Panda 3” (rated PG) in our courtyard (between the Sanctuary, CFLC and Education building). There is no charge for admission and free popcorn will be available; you are welcome to bring snacks as you desire. So, grab your lawn chair or blanket and invite your friends to join us for an evening of fun-filled cinematic adventure.
New Office Hours
Melissa Holmes has been promoted to Business Manager and will take over the duties of Treasurer. SPRB plans on hiring a person on a part-time basis to take over the daily duties of managing the office to free up Melissa for her new responsibilities. The church office hours have been changed to Monday-Friday, 9 am to 12 pm. This will be re-evaluated when the new office person is hired. At this time Melissa can still be reached at office@mtpisgahva.org and any changes to this will be communicated. If you are interested in helping with reception during office hours, please contact Melissa.
CARITAS Update
During the week of August 6-13, we sheltered 30+ guests per night including 15 children. We provided safe lodging, delicious meals, shower and laundry facilities. Our congregation came together to make this possible. We had 465 on site volunteer hours! In addition, there were generous donations of food, supplies, and money. The Mission Branch celebrates Mt. Pisgah's outpouring of love.
Youth Summer Sunday School
We are looking for people who are interested in helping our youth explore current events and how these events relate to their lives of faith. Curriculum will be provided; we will be using LinC youth curriculum from Cokesbury. If you are interested in leading or being the second adult any Sunday throughout the summer, please sign up here!
Are you storing items at JB Hall?
Work on JB Hall is nearing completion and it can no longer be used for storage. If you or your group are storing items in JB, please remove the items by August 27. After that date any remaining items will be discarded. If you have a large item and may need some help, please contact the Trustees to see if help can be arranged. Contacts: Dan Stembridge (danstembridge@challengediscoveryprojects.org), Gwen Turbeville (379-3671)
Can you be a blessing to local teachers?
Mt. Pisgah is reaching out to the school system and will help teachers at J.B. Watkins Elementary School get ready for the new school year. We need volunteers to go to Watkins to help the teachers with various preparatory tasks as well as donations of snacks for the teachers (such as bagels, fruit, juice and cookies). This "blessing of the teachers" will take place on Tuesday, August 30. For more information and to sign up to help, contact Helen Davison at helen.davison@comcast.net or 305-6903.
Caring and Sharing Group Starting Anew
The Monday morning Caring and Sharing Group will be restarting Monday, September 12 from 10:30 to noon. We will be reflecting on the dilemma of believing in a loving God while seeing suffering around the world as presented in Dr. Leslie Weatherhead’s book, The Will of God. Please contact Clair Cosby (594-0030 or dr.clair@comcast.net) by September 3 to reserve a study book.
UMCOR School Kits
Would you believe the school supplies are in the stores? YES! Now is the best time to get them while the prices are lower.
This is the list of items that go into one school kit:
  • pair of scissors (blunt tip only)
  • 3 units of paper (70 sheets in a spiral notebook) or loose leaf paper
  • hand-held pencil sharpener (at least 1 1/2 inches)
  •  30-centimeter ruler
  • 6 unsharpened pencils
  • 2 1/2 inch eraser
  • box of 24-count crayons
The school bags these items are placed in have already been purchased. Please bring your donations to the Gathering Room and place them in the wooden bins labeled UMCOR School Kits.
Belmont Garden Harvest
Our raised bed gardens are producing zucchini, beans, cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers! The produce is taken to Belmont’s food pantry to provide fresh produce to those in need. You can help by signing up to water and harvest on Mondays and Thursdays or to take the harvest delivery to Belmont on Fridays. Select a day by clicking here. Contact Karen Rush (794-2704) or Jeff Wing (317-5929) for more information. Thank you for taking part in the Community Garden!
Do you have any friends or neighbors with preschool aged children? Do you have a business or work for a business that makes contact with young families? Please help us spread the word about our wonderful preschool! We still have openings for our 2 ½ and 3 year old classes for the 2016-17 school year. Brochures are available in the Gathering Room and outside the preschool office. Please feel free to take as many as you would like!
