U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s
Local Food Local Places:
A Discussion of Best Practices
Date: September 7, 2016
Time: 2:00-3:00 p.m. EDT

The Office of Rural Housing and Economic Development (ORHED) invites you to take part in our next Peer-to-Peer conference call. Scheduled for September 7, 2016, this call will offer participants the opportunity to learn about available activities through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s mission is to protect human health and the environment. EPA’s Local Foods, Local Places program helps people create walkable, healthy, economically vibrant neighborhoods through the development of local food systems. The program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), EPA, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), and the Delta Regional Authority (DRA), with support from the White House Rural Council. Local Foods, Local Places aims to boost economic opportunities for local farmers and businesses, improve access to healthy local food, and promote childhood wellness. In selecting Local Foods, Local Places partner communities, special consideration is given to communities in the early stages of developing local food enterprises and creating economically vibrant communities. Partner communities in Appalachia and the Delta region are eligible to receive financial assistance to help them implement their local food and community revitalization plans.

Leaders of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will share their knowledge of successfully implementing activities that have expanded and created opportunities for those living in rural communities, with a focus on Local Foods Local Places. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions about best practices and establish contacts for future reference.
