The Asheville Kiwanis Club meets for lunch, a business meeting and a guest speaker from 12-1:30pm each Tuesday at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, off Merrimon Ave near downtown.

  • Tom and Elaine's daughter, Rebekah, who will be moving to South Korea Aug. 24.
  • Thank you to all who brought in food for the food drive.  Steadfast House received 516 pounds  of food and $130 in cash.
  • Our last Tourist game is August 30th.  If you signed up to help, please be there at 5:00.  Be sure to wear closed toe shoes, khakis and your Kiwanis shirt.
  • All budget requests for next year need to be given in writing to Jensen or Dawn by September 15th.  Forms are available at the meeting. 
  •  Our 2016-17  board is Russ, Dale, Amy, Paul, Cindy, Kristin, Scott S.
  •  Jessica and Dawn went to District convention last weekend in Charlotte. They are going to try to organize an event for all WNC Kiwanis Clubs in January.
  • The Kiwanis calf from the Calf Chain will be shown September 10 at the Mountain State Fair.  Time to be announced.
  • September 22 will be our final fundraiser of the fiscal year at Bonfire BBQ on Patton Ave.  More details to come!
  • There will also be a raffle, so please be thinking about a person or business that may be willing to donate a service or product. The more donations we get, the more money we can raise!  Let Jensen know if you have something for the raffle as soon as possible.

  • Homer is doing well in Arlington Va.  He misses everyone.

Speaker Spotlight
 
  • Jensen shared with us some of the highlights from the International convention in Toronto. 
  • The entire city of Toronto was filled with Kiwanis branding.
  • Chris Hatfield, International Space Station Astronaut, spoke.
  • "Kids Need Kiwanis" was the message throughout the week
  • A major priority for Kiwanis is membership.  There were 208 new clubs launched last year.  The decline in members has decreased from previous years.
Meeting Change!!
  • August 30th - No meeting at 12:00. Instead, our meeting will be a social event at the Asheville Tourist game with the Waynesville Club. The game starts at 7:00.  Pick up tickets at will call and tell them you are with Kiwanis.  We will all be sitting together with the Waynesville club.  Your ticket includes a hot dog and drink. Some of us will be working at Crash Kitchen, so be sure to come by and get your food from us so Kiwanis gets the credit! 
  • September 6 -  Rachel Broadbent with Muddy Sneakers, a program which  enriches the Standard Course of Study through experiential education in an outdoor setting where students connect with the land, become more active, and gain in self-confidence while improving science aptitude. 
  • September 13 - Denise Bitz - founder of Brother Wolf animal rescue
  • September 20 - Jack Thompson, Executive Director of The Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County, will discuss the roll the PSABC plays in preserving our history in Asheville in an ever changing environment.
  • September 27 - Installation of officers
