Jesus Mora's Cosmovision Maya
September 8-28, 2016

This September, Jesus Mora’s Cosmovision Maya will exhibit at the Toronto Centre for the Arts. Supported by North York Arts, a fellowship from The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and a grant from the Ontario Arts Council, Mora’s series of paintings explore the teaches of Mayan cosmology he has learned from Martolo Alvarez, a K’iche’ elder of the community.

Using the ancient texts of the Pop Wuj, a series of paintings were created using Mayan iconography. Mora writes: “The subjects of my work have a life cycle of their own, within which are contained reality, fantasy, the microscopic world and the universe. This represents a constant conversation between ourselves and our surroundings not only in the material world but also in the subconscious one.”

Time: Tuesday-Friday, 1:00pm - 4:30pm
Place: Lower Gallery, Toronto Centre for the Arts, 5040 Yonge Street
Cost: Free

Tafelmusik Presents: Handel Water Music
September 22, 2016
“Tafelmusik, whose members performed standing, offered a vigorous and well-paced interpretation, with stately, buoyant and crisply etched playing”
– The New York Times (on Water Music)

Composed in 1717 for a royal barge party on the River Thames, King George enjoyed this new piece so much that he reportedly requested that the musicians play it three times the same night! It is complemented by festive music by Handel contemporaries Bach and Rameau, and guest directed by violinist Elisa Citterio, who returns following her stunning Tafelmusik debut last November.

Time: 8:00pm
Place: George Westin, Toronto Centre for the Arts
