Over 400 million Muslims live in Africa, representing over 15% of the world’s Muslim population. This discussion-based seminar focuses on Muslim societies in Africa, and addresses themes such as education, law, politics, and terrorism. Together we will read cutting-edge scholarship as well as diverse primary sources composed by African Muslims, including travel writings, religious polemics, law codes, and philosophical reflections.
Alex Thurston joined Georgetown in 2014 after spending a year working on the Nigeria Desk at the Department of State. He has conducted field research in Nigeria and Senegal, and has written widely on Islam and politics in Africa.
