Chris Chats

How's the weather where you are? It's hot and humid here and I'm ready for it to cool down now.  Two weeks ago I had to miss teaching a class at Gotham Quilts as the three lifts in my apartment building were out of order due to the heat.  Even if I'd made it down the 23 storeys I'm not sure I'd have made it back up again six or more hours later after teaching the class and with no air con in the stairwells.  I've lived here five years and the only other time the lifts didn't work was during Hurricane (Superstorm) Sandy because of water damage.

I was super disappointed to miss my class too as the ladies are fab and I love catching up with them and because it was my last class for a few months as I'll be travelling most of September and October :(

This last week I've been out and about around Jersey City, Hoboken and Manhattan with my daughter, Flicky.  Her summer job ended and we had one week before she was flying back to Scotland for her final year at the University of St Andrews.  On our travels, some quilt inspiration caught my eye, as it does, and I'll share pics with you probably in the next Newsletter. She flew back Friday evening and I'm missing her like mad, it's fun doing girly things together and I love that she's into sewing too these days.

I have news about being featured in Danish weekly women's magazine Hendes Verden to share and also there's the Benartex giveaway I mentioned in the last Newsletter but it's about to end so be super quick if you want to join in - US entries open until 10 am Tuesday, 30 August for a chance to win a Simply Chic FQ bundle.

If you're happy to stick around, thanks for subscribing and let's do this together :D

What Do Quilters Wear To Bed?
I can't speak for everyone but the majority of quilters in the NYC Metro MOD Quilt Guild are getting a good night's sleep in sleepwear from Target.

These are mine - last season's pink pyjamas and this season's aqua/grey sewing nightie and pulling threads robe.  They're all sewing themed, super comfy and the fabric is silky to the touch - perfect attire for that upcoming sewing/quilting retreat.

I was nervous about the quality as they look cheap and a bit nasty to be honest but they haven't deteriorated in the wash (yep, they looked that bad when I bought them!).  They do nothing to flatter the figure, which is why I'm not sharing a pic of me wearing them, still when it's all about the print design and comfort these definitely score full marks.
Where Have All The Blogs Gone?
Did you see this blog post by Rachel @Stitched in Color, she comments on how quiet Quilty Blogland is these days and I agree that things have changed drastically since the rapid rise in the use of Instagram. I read with great interest the comments on her post - to date all 301 of them!

I believe there's still a place for blogging; my blog continues to grow currently averaging 70,000 visitors each month from all over the world and that tells me I must be doing something right!  Blog post comments have fallen off vastly as have, I'll sadly admit, my responses to comments.  There was a time when my blog following was small enough that I replied to every comment and developed numerous internet friendships but the growth of the blog and also of myself as a teacher, designer and brand has changed that.  I do make a point of replying to questions posed in the comments, though it's not always as immediate as it once was.

I've adapted how I use the blog to suit my readership - creating a newsletter allows me to share snippets of news, info and ideas with you and then point you to my blog for more detailed info and tutes.  Judging by how fast my newsletter subscription is growing I think it's a format that's working for us both.

I have my own dilemma arising from this - the blog is free for me to use but, due to the size my newsletter subscription has rapidly grown to, in the next 2 weeks or so the newsletter email subscription service will no longer be free.  The service is free for up to 2,000 subscribers and when I started the newsletter in May I thought this was a goal only to dream of yet after only 4 months we're already at 1,700+ subscribers.  The paid-for email service certainly isn't cheap and this means I'm now having to think about covering my expenses which haven't been an issue for me previously.  One possible solution for me is to create patterns to sell - don't worry, my plan is to still include free tips and tutes via the blog also - and I'm quickly trying to think of other ways to monetise what I do without changing anything drastically for you.

Unfortunately, the newsletter doesn't allow reader responses that are instant, as on Instagram and Facebook, or to open a discussion as we can in blog comments but we do have email and I'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions on this, click the button to get in touch - Chris :D

Maribel Bowties Quilt by Chris @madebyChrissieD.com

What I'm Working On
I've started working on a quilt top using the Maribel fabric collection by Annabel Wrigley for Windham Fabrics. The pattern is the Bowties Quilt from a brand new quilting book A New Spin On Drunkard's Path by my friend and fellow NYC Metro MOD Quilt guild member, John Kubiniec.

Don't you just love the bonus Half Square Triangles you get when you trim your corners?  So much impact and zero effort.

I've played around with colour placement within the Bowties Quilt pattern layout since taking the above pic and I'm currently sewing the rows together.

The 30 blocks are in a 6 x 5 configuration measuring 36" x 30" and I'd like to make it a bit larger so I've got my thinking cap on around borders.
