“Little Holland” Remembered by Friends of Baginton Fields
Last Wednesday, Roger and Pauline attended the event organised by the Friends of Baginton Fields, which saw the unveiling of a plaque by a dignitary from the embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The plaque remembers the 500 Dutch children evacuated to Baginton Fields Hostel in 1945. Also in attendance were the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of the West Midlands, our local MP, the Curate in Charge at St. James, Whitley and many residents.
Entertainment was by The Notables (see below).

Today the old hostel site, known locally as “Little Holland”, has gone back to nature and so become a haven for wildlife, including at least 12 species of butterflies. It is well worth a visit. However, there is a threat to its future existence, as it is a designated brown field site and might be used as an expansion for the Whitley South project. More images will appear in next week’s update.

Save Our Libraries

Roger joined the "Save Coventry Libraries" group at Cheylesmore Library on Saturday 13th August, to highlight the plight of our library. They were making a tour of all the 5 libraries that have been threatened with closure. Their Facebook page is "Save Coventry Libraries".

Cheylesmore Library - Volunteers Required
More residents have “stepped forward”, which means that 11 residents have expressed an interest in volunteering at Cheylesmore Library, to help keep it open.
Under draft proposals, Cheylesmore Library can now only stay open if run by volunteers from May 2017.
If you are interested in volunteering to help run the library then please contact the Community Centre or cheylesmore.ward@gmail.com

Formal consultation on Coventry City Council's proposals to make £3.8m savings across libraries, children’s centres and youth services is set to be approved by councillors. A consultation period will happen between 12 September and 12 December. Read more

Ebbw Vale Terrace - Sheltered Housing Block being Demolished
Cllr Roger Bailey has been dealing with residents queries with respect to the activity at Ebbw Vale Terrace and visited the site on Friday to talk to the workman to better understand what is going on.

As reported in our 24th January update, residents were moved because it wasn’t fit for purpose..
Kevin Roach, Director of Regeneration said:
The rationale for Whitefriars rehousing residents from the block is that it has shared bathing facilities which we believe, and following consultation with customers, are not fit for purpose and meets the needs of our customers.

“Have More in Cheylesmore” Update
Following on from last week’s update, another community project that benefited from last year’s Asda 106 fund was the Somali Community Sewing Classes.

The money was used to buy sewing machines and to hold sewing classes at the Cheylesmore Community Centre.

One of the ladies said “A sewing lesson is a worthwhile opportunity to the people here as opposed to staying at home. I hope this facility continues to benefit more people because now I can sew my own clothes”.

Chess Academy at Cheylesmore
The Coventry Chess Academy is a social enterprise that teaches chess to children aged six to twelve years of age every Saturday morning at Cheylesmore Community Centre.

Their aim is to demonstrate the power of chess as a catalyst for social change by providing children with skills that will empower them in and outside the classroom.
