Welcome to the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project Newsletter!

Join us for upcoming events!

We at the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project wanted to send out an update as to some of the maps and visualizations that we've been making. We also want to invite you to our upcoming community event in Oakland!

As shockwaves of uncertainty and displacement from the latest tech boom ripple through the Bay Area, the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project, AEMP is hosting a community event to mark the completion of recent anti-displacement work in Alameda County supported through a grant from the Creative Work Fund.  At the event, AEMP will unveil a new report and map analyzing displacement related data from Oakland, Fremont, and the City of Alameda obtained through court and rent board record requests. We will also highlight personal narratives of displacement and resistance, honor those who participated in our East Bay oral history project, and amplify the work of collaborators. Facebook Invite Here!

Over the course of the last year, the AEMP has partnered with Tenants Together, a California-wide tenants rights and advocacy organization, to access previously inaccessible eviction data in Alameda County. On the day of the event, we will release a 20-page report highlighting data, which includes a list of Oakland’s newest serial evictors and analysis of eviction trends. We will also populate our online narrative map with new oral histories and video pieces that we have produced with a number of community partners, documenting stories of individuals and collectives resisting displacement in Oakland, Fremont, and Alameda.

We recently were recently awarded "Best Advocacy Through Art" by the East Bay Express! Check out all the other amazing recipients here!
We've presented our work at the Allied Media Conference again this past June, highlighting our narrative work and the resistance struggles of some our community partners, such as the Midtown Apartment rent strike highlighted in this documentary by Brandon Jourdan

New Maps
Relocation Map
Relocation Map

Our new relocation story map is part of a collaboration with the Eviction Defense Collaborative in which we mapped where 500 residents evicted in 2012 ended up post-eviction.
We were able to see where people relocated within San Francisco, as well as where outmigration and exurbia took displaced tenants. We also map those who ended up homeless and deceased post-eviction.

Special thanks to our intern Sam Raby for his amazing work with these maps! Also check out this article by Erin McElroy feature these maps here!

Community and Youth Power Mapping

We have recently partnered with community groups such as the Bay Area Video Collaborative and the Betti Ono Gallery to produce a series of community power maps. Check out this Youth Power Map made with youth from BAVC here
You can also check out our Community Power Map made with the Betti Ono Gallery in this short video, along with a bunch of our other maps!

We recently partnered with Carto to create an interactive map detailing demographic change and concentration alongside eviction rate. We came up with some new ways to codify areas based on ACS data to detail  concentrations of wealth. More in this article here!

Eviction Defense Collaborative Report, 2015

For the second year in a row, we partnered with the Eviction Defense Collaborative to analyze their client data and produce their annual report. Featuring our mural in Clarion Alley on the cover, the report contains the latest trends of eviction rate in San Francisco, highlighting some major shifts in the southern-most zip codes.
As in 2014, we found that disproportionately Black and Latinx residents are facing displacement in the city.

Special thanks to Terra Graziani, Finley Coyl, and Erin McElroy for their work on the report.
