Things Change ~ When a Child is Born…

Good evening dear reader & welcome to my world for another week. I have often reflected in my journey in recent years the comments: ‘It came to Pass’ & ‘This too will pass’. In earlier years I did not give them a lot of thought, rather, the opposite, if any. And I often disliked change, particularly where it was imposed, as many of us baby boomers have experienced.

However, I have come to terms with many things, perhaps I have, or am maturing… I have come to accept most things in life are not permanent. Things do change. Knowing this, can assist you handle the bad times & stop you from clinging to the good ones. So, I would like to share my personal mantra, three important truths I now endeavour to live by:

  • Enjoy today. It is a gift, & why it is called ‘the present’. Even though we are constantly moving toward another goal or objective, we need to learn to live in the present. I no longer put my joy on hold, or let it slip away while waiting for the next big event.
  • Learn to appreciate the little things. They are all around us, the love of a good friend, a kind deed, a fresh insight, a good nights’ sleep, & delight on the face of a child. When one appreciates what we have, it multiplies.
  • Each ending brings a new beginning. There are two myths we should never believe. The first is the ‘forever myth’, which suggests your situation will never improve. The second is the ‘never myth’, which suggests if things get any worse you will never be able to handle them. Both are distortions.

Everything ‘comes to pass’ friends, & when you are going through it, remember, the ending will bring a new beginning. So, to my message for you this week dear reader. It will be 12 months this coming Monday since my mother died in Invercargill. In memory, we have placed the following in Southland Times for August 22nd:

Ighty Butler.
Those who have a Mother, cherish her with care…
For you never know the heartache, till you see her vacant chair.
Miss you Mum ~ gee 12 months may have gone quickly, but not a week passes when you are not in our minds & heart.

Following this sadness, which has come to pass, we are delighted to welcome my 4 day old grandson in Matsuyama, Japan on August 16th. As a new grandfather I can report this is as exciting as having ones’ own child over 30 years past. One ends life ~ another begins. The circle of life; to everything there is a season. To conclude this week, I am reminded of the words of a fabulous song for such an occasion:

A ray of hope flickers in the sky
A tiny star lights up way up high
All across the land dawns a brand new morn
This comes to pass, when a child is born

A silent wish sails the seven seas
The winds of change whisper in the trees
And the walls of doubt tumble tossed and torn
This comes to pass when a child is born

A rosy hue settles all around
You start to feel you're on solid ground
For a spell or two no one seems forlorn
This comes to pass, when a child is born

It's all a dream, an illusion now
It must come true, sometime soon somehow
All across the land, dawns a brand new morn
This comes to pass, when a child is born

This all comes to pass friends... Thank you for taking the time to be with me once again & I hope my journey may encourage you also. Until next weekend, this is Kenn Butler in Paradise, Nelson, with my best wishes & to you all, a splendid week.
