Letter from the Directors
Dear Everest Family,

If you had the chance to walk into our Everest building this week, you were fortunate enough to feel the Tesla (Nikola not Elon) level of electricity that was permeating the walls each day. The return of our wonderful Snow Leopards breathed life back into our school, and we were so-so happy. Thank you for trusting us with your students each year. You and your student are our priority, and we appreciate your partnership every day.

As we mentioned in our last letter, we have new faculty on site this year to provide your students with more specialized instruction so that all of our students are getting the level of engagement they need to surpass their personal academic and social goals. We really appreciate the way all of you opened your arms on Thursday night during Back to School Night pt. 1 to greet and welcome our new faculty. They kept saying how lucky they felt to be a part of such a warm and dedicated community. We couldn’t agree more, and our community grew even stronger on Thursday night when our families met with their mentor to identify the ways they would be partners in their student’s success this year, to discuss communication preferences, and to prepare for upcoming PLP Family Goals meetings.

We love evening events when our community comes together, and we want to remind you of our Back to School Night pt. 2 event on September 8th from 7:00 - 8:30 at Everest. The focus of the evening will be to meet your student’s grade level teachers and to continue to build relationships at Everest. Please block this date out on your calendar and plan to attend. We can’t wait to see you!

Speaking of building relationships and strengthening our community, we are in fifth gear preparing for our annual school wide camping trip which happens this Thursday and Friday at Boulder Creek Scouting Campground.  The camping trip is designed for students to build attachments with their mentor, teachers, and peers. It is always amazing to see the different dynamics relationships take on while outside of the normal school structure. We are all able to see one another in new ways and form a whole new type of appreciation for the strengths we each bring to Everest.  As you prepare your student for this trip, please review this preferred packing list:

BRING
A bag lunch for Thursday

Sleeping bag
Water bottle
Change of clothes
Deodorant and other toiletries
Warm jacket for night time
Flashlight
Toothbrush, toothpaste
Mosquito repellant
If applicable: any medication that you need (make sure you have submitted proper documentation to Ms. Campos/Rosas)

LEAVE BEHIND:
Electronics (no speakers, computers, video games, etc)
Hair dryers, curling irons, straighteners (no outlets!)
Extra food (Raccoons will go to your tent!)
Anything valuable (You will be sad if you lose it in the woods!)
Nice clothes that you wouldn’t want to get dirty
Anything that will get damaged if wet
Anything that would potentially get you in trouble

Every year this event is a highlight, and we know this year’s will be no different. You are invited to join us, and if you would like more information on how, scroll down in this newsletter for an announcement from the one and only Jay Patel. Thanks for your leadership, Jay!

To close, we are so proud of the work our team has completed over the last few weeks. The Everest team is fired up and ready to go this year, and we are confident that the 2016/2017 school year is going to be one for the Everest books!

See you soon, Snow Leopards: Paws up, paws down, shake ya tails...

Sincerely,
Chris Lewine & Drew Moriates

Message From the EPO
Building the Everest Community

I hope that the first week of school went as smoothly as possible for everybody! I know that it is tough to get out of summer mode and get back into school mode, especially in the middle of August. I can't believe my son Christopher is already a Junior here at Everest. Time does go by fast.

One of our big goals this year is to improve the feeling of community at our school. We know that it is hard when your child is in high school...there aren't as many opportunities to meet other parents and families are coming from many different schools. So we are offering a few different ways to feel more a part of the Everest community:

1) Weekly EPO Meetings - We have short 45 minute meetings on Wednesday mornings from 8:15-9:00am. However, the second week of the month, the meetings will be on Tuesday evenings from 7:00-8:00pm (the first Tuesday meeting is September 13th at 7pm). Everyone is invited to come to any of these meetings. Mr. Lewine and Mr. Moriates attend these meetings and we talk about all things Everest...events coming up, things we would like to see happen, questions we may have, etc. We welcome you to come to as few or as many of these meetings as you like, and learn more about Everest!

2) First Friday Coffees - Parents are invited to come to the coffee shop Main & Elm at 150 Elm Street in Redwood City on the first Friday of the month from 8:15-9:45am. Come for as long or as short as you want, meet other Everest parents and enjoy some delicious coffee and/or breakfast (no host). We would love to see you there!

3) FUNraising Dinners - We will be planning a few dinners at local restaurants throughout the year. Come join us for a fun dinner and to raise a little money for our school (a percentage of the proceeds will be donated by the restaurant to our school). Look in future newsletters for upcoming dates.

4) Volunteer - We use SignUpGenius.com when we need volunteers for an event. You can find the signup sheets at: http://everest.summitps.org/parents/volunteer  We will be adding more volunteer opportunities on that page soon. Currently you can sign up to drive/chaperone for the camping trip or you can sign up to help with the upcoming Open Houses. We will have more volunteer opportunities added shortly...such as the monthly Teacher Appreciation Lunches, etc.

The best way to find out what is going on at Everest is to read the weekly newsletter, like you are doing right now!

If you would like to get involved or if you have questions, please contact me at lindamburt@gmail.com.

New Family FAQ Corner
Q: What if I don’t have internet access at home?

Everest issues a Chromebook computer to each student. The student is expected to access all schoolwork and school communications via the internet.  If you don’t have internet access at home, there are low cost internet options available.  See http://everest.summitps.org/parents/forms for the low cost internet document.

Q: As a parent, how can I support my student?

Be open minded.  Encourage your student to be open minded.  Ask questions and give yourself and your student time to transition and learn how to successfully navigate within the Everest environment.

For more FAQs, see http://everest.summitps.org/parents/new-family-welcome or access it directly here .

Join The Everest Parents Yahoo Group

We’d like to invite you to join the Everest Parents Yahoo Group!  This is an informal group that is sponsored by the Everest EPO and moderated by a parent volunteer coordinator.  This is another communication channel where parents can share information about school or community events, request carpools or volunteers, and share information about academic, extracurricular and community opportunities.  The goal of this group is to foster communication among parents of students attending Everest Public School.    This is not an official communications channel. Please continue to contact teachers or administration directly.

If you’d like to join, you will need a yahoo ID or will need to create one.  You can then click on this link https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Everestparents/info and request membership approval.   If you have further questions or need assistance, please contact our parent volunteer coordinator, Stacey Signorello at Stacey@im-electric.com.
