POWERING PERFORMANCE. INSPIRING EXCELLENCE
– A MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

"Team Canada secured our twenty-second medal at the Rio Games this morning, tying our highest ever total at a non-boycotted Olympics. Combined with the Tragically Hip's concert this evening, it certainly was a monumental day for Canadians everywhere.

The record-tying medal was won by mountain biker Catharine Pendrel, who won bronze in the cross-country race this morning.  And what a gritty performance it was! She began the race unavoidably trapped behind a crash, pushing her into 15th spot.  From there, she put her head down and pressed on mightily, passing rider after rider, earning a spot up on the podium.  What an inspiring - and truly Canadian - performance.

Our Innovation & Research Lead, Dr. Trent Stellingwerff, has worked extremely closely with Catharine over the past few years leading up to Rio and has see her drive and dedication up close.  Using the expertise that has made him one of the most highly respected physiologists in the Canadian sport system, Dr. Stellingwerff was a key member of "the team behind the team" that worked with Catharine to get her on the podium.  We are as delighted as anyone to see all of her hard work rewarded.  She is truly an amazing athlete.

As Day 15 comes to a close, it's hard to believe it's the closing ceremonies already tomorrow.  What a Summer Games it has been!"

Pendrel's Gritty Performance Earns Canada Record-Tying Medal

Catharine Pendrel (Kamloops, BC) overcame a disastrous start in Women's Cross-country in Mountain Bike to capture the bronze medal at Deodoro, Brazil on Saturday morning.  The race featured an unavoidable crash at the beginning which was extremely bad luck for Pendrel as the crash pinned her back to 15th place.

In an unbelievably gritty effort, she spent the remainder of the race in catch-up mode, passing the other riders one-by-one and gaining a place on the podium with her gritty bronze medal finish.

Catharine Pendrel works very closely with Canadian Sport Institute Pacific Innovation & Research Lead and physiologist Trent Stellingwerff.

Canadian Runners Set Multiple Canadian Bests In The Evening's Races

In the Women's 800mMelissa Bishop (Eganville, ON) set a new Canadian Record - one of many Canadian Records to fall in Rio - racing in a time of 1:57.02, which was just shy of the podium, giving her a 4th place finish.

After the race featured some disqualifications and subsequent reinstatements, Mohammed Ahmed (St. Catharines, ON) also set a new Canadian standard, coming in 4th in the in Men's 5000m final, the best ever result by a Canadian in that race at the Olympics.

CSI Pacific-affiliated athlete Sage Watson (Medicine Hat, AB) was one of four Canadians running the Women's 4x400m race later in the Rio night. The team finished in a very impressive fourth position in the final.

Nate Brannen (Cambridge, ON) came in 10th in the Men's 1500m final.  It was Brennan's first Olympic final in his third, and likely final, attempt.

Three Canadian Women Take On Triathlon On Day 15

The Women's Triathlon was run this morning along beautiful Copacabana Beach, with three Canadians racing.  Amélie Kretz (Blainville, Quebec) finshed 34th, Kirsten Sweetland (Victoria, BC) came in 41st and Sarah-Anne Brault (Quebec City, QC) was right behind her in 42nd.
