Dear Friends,

I hope this newsletter finds you enjoying the final weeks of summer, wherever you are and whatever you are doing.

There's another Singalong Soirée coming up this Sunday at the Tranzac Club - we hope you can come down and join Gathering Sparks for uplifting summer singing!

In other news, Gathering Sparks is getting ready for the Shelter Valley Folk Festival on Labour Day Weekend, and then we jump in our car and head to Nova Scotia for a fall tour. If you know anyone in Nova Scotia, please let them know we are coming!

I am also getting ready for fall ukulele groups - three groups will be starting up in October. New this fall: a Ukulele Orchestra, open to ukulele players at all levels. We'll be working on arrangements with differentiated parts, and hopefully doing some performances as an ensemble. Read on for more!

Ukulele Orchestra
I have had a dream for a long time of starting a Ukulele Orchestra-- an ensemble made up of ukulele players at many different levels that would occasionally perform at community-based events. I am excited to announce we will be launching with a trial session in October. The Orchestra will be open to ukulele players at any level of experience beyond absolute beginner. We will be working with written music arranged in parts, and sometimes with arrangements taught by ear. There will be parts for people with no experience reading music all the way up to those who can easily read and play music written for ukulele.

More details will be coming soon! But for now, here is basic information. Please contact me ASAP if you would like to participate:

A Few of My Favourite Things

I try to keep a running list of items for "My Favourite Things," but usually there are some timely last-minute things I feel I need to include, so my running list sits idle. Here are a few from the running list that I hadn't found space for up to now:

New Louis Armstrong Recordings Surface
It's amazing the treasures that can still turn up, even after all these years and decades. Apparently, these recordings hadn't been heard before they were unearthed recently. They are remarkable for their clarity. Listen and enjoy!

Hazel Scott
I had heard recordings of Hazel Scott many years ago, but I didn't know much about her until reading this Wikipedia article. She was quite the show woman and exerted a surprising amount of control over her own career at a time when that was not the accepted norm for African-American performers (especially women). She was active in civil rights issues and had her own TV variety show until she was blacklisted. Check out this amazing performance!
