Like Supervisor of the Year Award, Tree Planting and the Caulfield Social Jam is back! on Facebook

Dear <<First Name*>>,

While most students were enjoying a break during the semester holidays, several members of the MPA Executive Committee were busy discussing postgraduate issues at various student conferences in Australia.

Parmes who is the MPA’s Womens’ Officer attended the Network of Women Students Australia (NOWSA) conference in Sydney where many issues were discussed in relation to gender and sexuality within the context of Australian universities. In particular, the “Support student safety, stop the war on women” National Union of Students campaign was at the forefront of the NOWSA agenda.

Three MPA executive members, Ngoc, David and Alex, attended the Council of International Students Australia (CISA) annual meeting in Darwin. This year’s conference theme was "Breaking Barriers" which highlighted issues such as language barriers, working rights, safety and employability for international students as well as mechanisms put in place to support international students.

Finally, past MPA executive member, Thomas, attended Queer Collaborations, which is a conference organized by students for students with a focus on bringing the queer community together and providing insights into queer-related issues. A highlight of the conference was the ‘Postgrad Catch Up session’, which discussed various issues including the lack of events for queer postgrads at universities, the barriers of entry into postgraduate courses for queer students and the lack of visibility of queer students on campus.

Since their return from these conferences, Parmes, Ngoc, David, Alex and Thomas have been inspired and motivated to look for ways to improve the postgraduate student experience at Monash and have been busy sharing their ideas and lessons learnt with the rest of the MPA Executive Committee and the wider university.

Cheers,
The MPA

Don’t fall for an offer too good to be true

Recently some naughty people have been posting to the MPA Facebook group links to places where you can buy essays. Of course these posts are quickly pulled down and the user banned.

Don’t be tempted by these offers that seem too good to be true, because they are! It’s called plagiarism and it is cheating. Monash University has sophisticated software to detect plagiarism. Many students face the possibility of exclusion from their course and therefore the university because they plagiarised.

Plagiarism is passing off someone else’s work as your own. How can it happen? It can be accidental or intentional. Either way it is still in breach of university policies. Having someone else write your essay is cheating. Having someone else rewrite your essay is cheating. Failing to put in proper referencing and quotation marks is cheating unless you can prove it was an accident which is hard to do. Check your work.  Double check and triple check. Don’t pay someone to write your essay. Don’t believe someone when they say all we do is “edit" your work. If they wrote your essay or rewrote it, it is plagiarism.

If you do get into trouble, our MPA advocates are here to help you.  Come and see us.
