Thanks to everyone for coming out to our first ice cream social at Warren Hook Park. Judging by the empty tubs of ice cream we’d definitely say it was a success. So let’s make it an annual event, and see you next year!

Family Movie Night returns on Saturday, October 29, 6 p.m. in the LHA garden. Bring the kids and come see a "scary" movie outdoors. We’ll provide popcorn and drinks, adults can BYOB. Movie TBA soon so stay in touch with LHA on Facebook and our website.

If you missed the Ice Cream Social or last year's Family Movie Night, photos of both events can be found on our here.

ASSOCIATION UPDATES

National Night Out
All over Oakland on August 2nd, neighbors were outside talking with newcomers and long-timers, getting acquainted and re-acquainted. National Night Out is a nationwide block party that encourages "get to know one another to reduce crime" parties. The 32nd annual 'America's Night Out Against Crime' drew over 37 million people, in BBQs, ice cream socials, cocktail parties, and street potlucks. Here in LHA, gatherings could be visited on 20+ streets, some with a few neighbors and a beverage, others with a potluck spread. Obviously, neighbors enjoyed the camaraderie and evening outside. The best deterrent to crime continues to be neighbors watching out for each other. Let's talk to our neighbors often!

Thank You, Ron Shapiro
Ron is retiring as an LHA Director and Chair of the Membership Committee after two busy years of service. We are sorry to see him leave the Board. Ron and his committee were innovative in establishing an ice cream social event and a children's movie night, giving families with young children an opportunity to entertain all members of the family at one social event. The evening social for adults at Michel Bistro was the first of, we hope, many more neighborly gatherings. All bright ideas providing families in our neighborhood an opportunity to mingle and make new friends. His steady influence, good judgment, along with timely skill at social media and communications served the neighborhood, Board, and LHA well. The community cherishes his ability to engender a warm and friendly spirit in the neighborhood. Let's have another director with these useful qualities on the Board.

COMMUNITY NEWS

November Ballot Local Funding Measures
Oakland voters will have at least three funding measures on the ballot in November. $600 million for the City, Alameda County’s $580 million for affordable housing, and Oakland Unified School District’s $120 annual parcel tax. Read more on our site.

Park Boulevard Road Diet and Traffic Calming
District 2 Councilmember Abel Guillen reports that Park Boulevard has been and will continue to get improvements for pedestrian safety, new bike lanes, electronic speed signs, and other methods of calming the traffic. A major intersection on the walking route to the middle school is getting a pedestrian-actuated, flashing beacon at the crosswalk. Concerns of surrounding neighborhoods about the impact of a road diet and these other measures are being considered in the overall solution. Work will continue in stages into 2017, possibly into 2018 if a grant is awarded.

Grand Avenue Road Diet Reviewed
City of Oakland Public Works continues to tweak and improve the Grand Avenue traffic flow following its road diet. Signal timing changes and supplemental signage are among the changes recommended.
