National Night Out
All over Oakland on August 2nd, neighbors were outside talking with newcomers and long-timers, getting acquainted and re-acquainted. National Night Out is a nationwide block party that encourages "get to know one another to reduce crime" parties. The 32nd annual 'America's Night Out Against Crime' drew over 37 million people, in BBQs, ice cream socials, cocktail parties, and street potlucks. Here in LHA, gatherings could be visited on 20+ streets, some with a few neighbors and a beverage, others with a potluck spread. Obviously, neighbors enjoyed the camaraderie and evening outside. The best deterrent to crime continues to be neighbors watching out for each other. Let's talk to our neighbors often!
Thank You, Ron Shapiro
Ron is retiring as an LHA Director and Chair of the Membership Committee after two busy years of service. We are sorry to see him leave the Board. Ron and his committee were innovative in establishing an ice cream social event and a children's movie night, giving families with young children an opportunity to entertain all members of the family at one social event. The evening social for adults at Michel Bistro was the first of, we hope, many more neighborly gatherings. All bright ideas providing families in our neighborhood an opportunity to mingle and make new friends. His steady influence, good judgment, along with timely skill at social media and communications served the neighborhood, Board, and LHA well. The community cherishes his ability to engender a warm and friendly spirit in the neighborhood. Let's have another director with these useful qualities on the Board.
