GIRLS IN TECHNOLOGY MENTORING PROGRAM
Calling all high school girls! Do you know a high school girl in grades 9 through 12 who may be interested in a STEM career (or perhaps needs help deciding)? The Girls in Technology mentoring program will give them an opportunity to meet professional women in STEM, learn how these women formed their careers, understand more about STEM career opportunities, and meet like-minded girls! The Virginia Mentor – Protégé program meets at Microsoft in Reston once a month, October to April, 6-8:30 pm. Girls in Technology is now accepting protégé applications for our 2016-2017 mentor-protégé program with locations in Maryland, Virginia, and DC, apply here: https://womenintechnology.wufoo.com/forms/k17kx6tt1dd0v5z/.  Sponsored by Women in Technology http://www.womenintechnology.

CALLING HIGH SCHOOL JR AND SR GIRLS
The Society of Women Engineers at the University of Virginia invites high school seniors and juniors to apply to our High School Visitation program on Saturday, November 19, 2016. The program gives young women a comprehensive look at engineering fields and UVA’s engineering curriculum through informative speakers and hands-on design activities. The program is designed to benefit participants with all levels of engineering experience, but we particularly target those students who are not yet familiar with the field and may be interested in applying to engineering schools or pursuing a STEM career. To apply, students should complete the HSV Fall 2016 Application. This fall session particularly targets high school seniors, but juniors can also apply. Students who have previously applied to HSV, are in the targeted grade level, and demonstrate a strong interest in engineering through their essay will receive priority acceptance and priority consideration for an overnight stay. The application must be completed online by 11:59 pm on Saturday, October 22, 2016.
The attached flier provides more information about the event and instructions on how to apply online through our website.

SCIENCE FAIR JUDGES NEEDED FOR YHS SCIENCE FAIR
Do you have any friends or associates with a science background?   We could use your help in locating Science Fair judges. A science fair judge needs three things:  (1) to be available on January 28, 2017 from 7:30am to noon; (2) to be familiar with the basic scientific principles, scientific method of experimentation, and hopefully statistics (the last one is a wish!); and (3) to have an open mind, kind heart and really want to interface with teens--that is the KEY to a great scientist being a super judge! One additional note:  Parents who have students in the fair are not always the best options--in fact, we try NOT to have judges who have kids in the fair, because not only could they run into their own, but their kid's friends.  It gets sticky.  If you can help with judge recruitment in anyway please contact Michelle Buehlmann via email. MichelleBuehlmann@hotmail.com

DONATIONS NEEDED FOR STAFF WELCOME BACK BREAKFAST
The Staff Appreciation Committee is planning a Welcome Back Breakfast for all teachers and staff on Thursday, September 22nd from 7:30 to 10:30 AM.  Many donations are needed to make this a success!  Please use the link to the SignUpGenius (below).  Let's show our appreciation by starting the year off with a warm & hearty Welcome Back!  If you have any questions, feel free to contact Paula Dierkes at 703-533-3746 or mi5boyz@aol.com.   Thank you in advance for your help!

HOMECOMING DANCE SET FOR OCTOBER 15 - HELP NEEDED
Yorktown’s Homecoming Dance will be held Saturday, October 15 at 8:00 p.m. in the Yorktown Gym, and we are seeking volunteers to supplement the school staff and police who traditionally supervise the dance. Volunteers are needed from 7:30 to 11:00 in shifts of 1, 2 or more hours. Your help is crucial and it’s a great way to be a part of the Yorktown community on a very special evening for the students (you also get to see everyone dressed up)! Volunteers are needed in the coat check area, refreshment table and as hall monitors who provide extra eyes-and-ears for the police, staff and teachers. Parent chaperones are not responsible for reprimanding students or any disciplinary action. School staff will handle that, if needed. To volunteer, please use this link: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0f4ca5aa22a31-homecoming1  For more details, contact the chaperone coordinator, Roena O’Donnell at roenao@gmail.com or 703-283-0858.
